As of this past Saturday, WFMD talk radio personality Blaine Young was chosen by the Frederick (MD) Republican Central Committee to fill Charles Jenkins' seat on the Board of County Commissioners. So, we wonder what will happen to Blaine's show on WFMD Radio?www.fredericknewspost.com (1/31/10)

Does anyone remember the LockerRoom interview that Tom Brookshire conducted with the then reclusive Cowboys running back Duane Thomas after the Super Bowl many years ago? As I recall, Jim Brown had to act as "Peacekeeper" during that moment. Though I have no recollection of Tom's time in our area. Rusty Gibson (1/31/10)

Thank heaven we won't have to listen to Paw-trrreeeeesay Gwadaloooopay on WTOP any longer. Now, if she would only take Neal Augenstein with her. I don't know what it is with his voice, but it always sounds like he's got a mouth full or marbles. Just because you have a deep voice doesn't necessarily make your voice any more palatable to listen to. Listening to him is almost as irritating as having to endure Dave Brown. (1/31/10)

Damnit, CBS. You've gone too far this time! www.theonion.com (1/31/10)

BREAKING NEWS... The Baltimore Sun is now the ONLY TRIBUNE newspaper in the U.S. to BAN COMMENTS according to Baltimore Media Blog Nope, not the Chicago Tribune, LA Times or Florida papers, checked them all, they all allow comments. This is true. Hmmmm. Very weird. (1/31/10)

I thought I was still drunk or hung over from last night, but nope, it's just WBFF FOX 45's out of sync broadcast of FOX News Sunday. Their voices are like 1-2 secs ahead of their lips. It's driving me INSANE! LOL WNUV 54 The CW Baltimore is often out of sync and skipping during primetime for like a year now. The people at Sinclair just don't seem to give a rats ass. This goes on like every single day with 45 or 54, mostly in HD, but sometimes the HD feed is fine and the commercials skip in SD! How do they sell advertising time? Both stations are so often completely unwatchable unless you're on drugs! LOL (1/31/10)

If indeed management forbade Donnie Simpson from reminiscing with Huggy Lowdown and Chris Paul, then management there are complete tools..I also read in that article that one of the production assistants was fired for playing music, including a Prince song, that wasn't approved by management..But yet, management obviously has approved some of the rap songs that are played that require every other word bleeped..Donnie should be overjoyed to leave that place.. (1/31/10)

Did anyone else catch Chuck Bell saying he had some "money shots" to show us? (1/31/10)

Patricia Guadalupe Exits WTOP - ah that's her name. I could never figure out what the hell she was saying. (1/31/10)

Ol' Donnie mentioned SEVERAL times in SEVERAL interviews..."this is NOT the end" and many times referring to 'NOT LEAVING' ...my guess, he'll show up on XM or back locally someplace...maybe BET. (1/31/10)

Dave's response: His non-compete contract with PGC owner CBS Radio runs through March 2011. So, I don't think you'll be hearing or seeing much of him until then.....

"Would someone please inform WTOP's Patricia Guadalupe that the correct past tense of "plead" is "pleaded", not "pled."" Jeez Dave: How could you miss this one, viewed on my local WASHINGTON DC internet provider VERIZON FIOS about our pal El Rushbo? www.tmz.com (1/31/10)

Well...well...well... one of the WMEX Boston's "Dan Donovans" shows up right here locally on dcrtv. A friend who had been recruited by the station owner, Mac (Max) Richmond many moons ago with a job already in hip pocket ( with Mr. R's blessing) ran across one of the "Dan Donovans"----- who must have been some sort of assistant to Arnie Ginsburg , at the time--- and do you know what he told him? He told him his news delivery sounded too much like Dick Stark, the famed, golden voiced network announcer for "What's My Line.,"The Perry Como Show," "Fireside Theatre," etc. etc. Imagine that from "Dan Donovan?" When great network tv director's wanted warmth, sincerity and credibility they used to say."Give it the Dick Stark Treatment" .... WMEX should only have wished that they had a Dick Stark on their staff to burn out as a newscaster and double as an alfafa--woo-woo schlock jock. Now that's Stark and it rhymes with spark and that rhymes with "dark?".....so much for "River City," then and now... with apologies to the Meredeth Willson Estate, and the late great Music Men, Robert Preston. of the original cast , and Danny Dark of WFUN.in Miami.. (1/31/10)

Goodbye the the annoying Pawtreecia Gwadaloopie! WTOP is sounding better on the weekends too as Dave Brown seems to be out of the part time rotation, thank Gawd. He reads too slow, bumbled and fumbled words on a regular basis, and always sounded like his vocal chords were torn to bits. (1/31/10)

It should be noted that Tom Brookshier also did Baltimore Colts pre-season broadcasts if I'm not mistaken up until 1982 in addition to many other things like NCAA basketball until his firing by CBS in 1983 after what was considered a racial slur, mild by today's standards. I think he said the Louisville basketball team had the total IQ of 40 or something to that effect. Also, in other Baltimore related news, WMAR 2 meteorologist Justin Berk apologizes for his incorrect forecast. More at Baltimore Media Blog (1/31/10)

Would someone please inform this previous poster to check their dictionary? Either usage is correct. (1/31/10)

OOBBEE says...What speech impediment will replace Patricia? (1/31/10)

Revised: “El DCRTV-o hears that Patricia “I roll my R’s & L’s” Guadalupe is leaving her reporting gig with all-snoonews all the time WTOP radio to join the DC-based National Association Of Lazy Latino Elected Officials as its communications chief. "It's been a great ride in the back of the van, but the allure of more focus on political issues, no American holidays, I can listen to the Grateful Dead & smoke pot all I want, no weekend work and no more money (ain’t that the point of everything these days?)... was too good to mess up, she writes on her Facedbook page.....some thank God: they couldn’t stand this faux Hispanic. People would turn to C-SPAN whenever they heard her “report”. The good news is she is being replaced by: wikipedia.org... wtop.com... “I grew up listening to one of the best rock "stations" in the entire world, the Armed Forces Radio Network. It was there I became a lifelong fan of the Grateful Dead” Although I've loved political reporting, what I really love about this job is the variety. One day I'm reporting live from the middle of a crowd at a basketball game, the next I'm at a state of the county speech, and another I'm talking about school funding, or preparations for the pope visit. “State of the country speech”? (1/31/10)

Question for the readers. I remember a morning show when I briefly lived in Rochester, NY back in the early 90's. I believe it was hosted by Brad May and Matt Barnaby. While I figure it's a long shot, can anyone give me info on where they may be now? They frequently would be joined by Dan Gare, Romen Turek, and Michael Keenan. Thanks. (1/31/10)

DCRTV Dave says, " I hear they're playing WASH at Gitmo these days....." 'fraid not. Banned by The Geneva Convention (torture) and the U.S. Constitution (cruel and unusual punishment). Likewise Limbaugh, Hannity, and most of the rest of the WMAL broadcast day. Except for Coast to Coast AM... -Unsigned Corporate Suit (1/30/10)

According to the NBA, the first player to break a glass backboard was Kevin "Chuck" Connors of the Boston Celtics, later to achieve fame as "The Rifleman" on TV. Connors also played major league baseball with the Cubs & Dodgers. Gus Johnson of the Baltimore Bullets is better known for it, but Connors was the first. (1/30/10)

The poster who commented on not-so-Fresh cracked me up. To further illuminate this level of banality....WASH ran a little promo extolling the music of 'today's WASH-FM and immediately went into Silly Love Songs by McCartney...may need to check the freshness date on that tune....and The Edge running something that said - it's doesn't have to be old to be classic and going into Brown Sugar. Uh, well, maybe it DOES have to be old to be classic. Also on the Edge - saying that 'from now all other radio stations are predictable - except this one"...and then playing Sweet Home Alabama. Folks, you can't make this stuff up. (1/30/10)

Dave's response: Gawd. Too many DC area music radio stations are programmed by sadistic bastards. I hear they're playing WASH at Gitmo these days.....

Congrsts to Patricia Guadalupe in her new gig. WTOP is now 50% improved. Please take Darcy with you! Now, if only there were room at WTOP for Chrys Quimby... -Unsigned Corporate Suit (1/30/10)

Would someone please inform WTOP's Patricia Guadalupe that the correct past tense of "plead" is "pleaded", not "pled." (1/30/10)

Dave's response: Just got the word that she's leaving WTOP. News up on the Front Page.....

If anyone still wondered why 94.7 Fresh FM can't get any ratings traction, a 10-minute listen starting at 10:10 last night offers all the evidence one needs. A sweeper touting "today's fresh music" led into Bonnie Raitt's 1991 song, "I Can't Make You Love Me." That's right, a song that made the charts 18 years ago is "today's fresh music." That sequence was followed by another produced sweeper, this time for the Grammy Weekend that mispronounced the title of the Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Pink and Mya remake of "Lady Marmalade." It's "Mar-muh-LAAHD", not "Mar-muh-LAID"! The word is given in the first 15 seconds of the song. And what's with the female voice for the Grammy promos who has the Elmer Fudd "r" as in "Fwesh FM." What a total embarrassing package. (1/30/10)

This is really for the Philly Mailbag, if you have such an animal. Just heard on ABC Radio news that Tom Brookshier died last night at age 78... sports.espn.go.com... www.bloomberg.com ...I worked with Tom (and Bill Hart and Tom Crane) on the morning news show on WCAU (now WPHT) in Philadelphia way back when (1970-71, if memory serves). Tom was a very nice guy and a great sportscaster! An All-Pro on the field and on the air! We had many "discussions" about our favorite NFL teams: the Eagles (his) and the Redskins (mine, having grown up in the DC area). --RB (1/30/10)

Dave's response: Before moving the family from the Philly area to the DC area in 1972 for a job change, my dad would always listen to "Radio 121" WCAU and Tommy Brookshier. Ah the memories. My dad had Eagles season tickets at Franklin Field back when the Eagles really sucked. I remember at one miserable, cold, rainy losing game I asked my dad what "puke" meant. Where'd you hear that, he asked. From a fellow fan ("I'm gonna puke") in the half empty stadium, I said.....

Regarding the question of who called Virginia Squires games, it was Marty Brennaman for much of the time before he got the job calling Reds games in Cincinnati (maybe like 1974?) I remember Marty still called ACC games for C.D. Chesley and Metrosports in the early 1980s, when the main tandem was Jim Thacker and Billy Packer. Got to meet Marty in Milwaukee back in 2003. a buddy of mine and I were hanging around after a Reds-Brewers game on Labor Day, hoping to see Bob Uecker following his first game back from joint replacement surgery that had kept him out of the booth much of the summer. I got autographs from George Grande and Marty, but they took Bob out a side door or something, it would be three years later at RFK before I got his signature. Marty was glad to see a couple of folks from Virginia and asked how the reception of WLW was out here. I told him between DXing on AM at night and XM radio, I could hear he and Joe Nuxhall nearly every night. Charles in Winchester (1/30/10)

Johnny, great post...I didn't realize you had worked at WHIL...Do you remember Dan Griffin? He was a great guy, he was also at WBZ I think he was GM, can't remember. I've touched base with him several times. Jerry Williams was the master..You were one of the Dan Donovans..How about that! Remember "Adventure Car Hop"...LOL Early on in my school days I worked WACE, WGAW...Then when I got out of school I worked for WPOR, first full time job. That's where Rolle Farrar first introduced himself to me. He was at WJAB the rocker and he came over to POR to welcome me to Portland. went back to WACE, was fired and then hired by My mentor Zack Land. My true teacher. ...Again, glad I stoked some fond memories.. PLB:0) (1/30/10)

Re: Joel Chaseman & the Baltimore Bullets. In one sense, Johnny Dark's observation is as spot-on as a Jack Marin jump shot from the corner. However, there were two incarnations of the team in Baltimore. In addition to the version which arrived from Chicago as the former Zephyrs and stayed around from 1963 - 1973...you also had the Bullets of the late 40's and 50's. They played their games at the Coliseum on North Monroe Street. Buddy Jeanette was coach for most of those years. The team won a championship or two and Radio 1-2-3 WITH carried the broadcasts...which is where Joel Chaseman came in to the picture. By the way, Buddy Deane once said that Chaseman was the first DJ (he also jocked PM Drive on WITH) to play Elvis records on the air in Baltimore. Spent two very delightful hours one day a few years back at Snyder's Restaurant at Hammonds Ferry Road and the Beltway in Baltimore grabbing lunch with Deane and Chaseman. It was a pleasure to sit there, shut up, and listen to these guys spin yarn after yarn about the old days. (1/30/10)

While I could certainly see Tigger moving to the morning slot on WPGC after Donnie Simpson's departure, what Adimu? His voice is well suited for morning drive time and he's got experience at WPGC. Sincerely, James (1/30/10)

re: "Comcast has added .. WHUT in high-def on its DC area systems" Here in CharmCity as well. Mapping as 32.1 via my Sony QAM, a 16:9 image appears inside a sizable black frame (defeating, to my mind, the notion of hi-def, but perhaps that's just Bombcast for ya..). The old analog ch. 19 slot is just snow. (1/30/10)

Dave's response: On my Comcast system, the standard-def, basic cable signal includes a "tiny" picture of the entire widescreen HD image of WHUT, surrounded on all sides by wide black bars. Looks really strange when 32 runs an non-HD show, as the image is surrounded by a sea of blackness. Very distracting and stooooopid. I'd much rather see a full-screen image of SD 32 on basic cable, with the left and right sides lopped off when running an HD program, like what most other broadcast stations do.....

Donnie Simpson is by all accounts a legendary broadcaster and a great person. But if he was getting paid 4 million bucks in this economy, and was not willing to adapt his show to win in PPM, then I'm not shedding one tear for him. I don't care how long he's been successful, the methodology changed, and if he wasn't willing or able to adjust his show himself, and he wasn't willing to listen to the ideas of anyone else, he has no one to blame but himself for his poor ratings the last year +, and the cancellation of his show. He wouldn't keep showing up if they stopped paying him, so why should they keep paying him if he wasn't producing, and made it clear he wouldn't make the necessary efforts to improve the numbers. You have to wonder if Huggie and Chris Paul saw this coming, and jumped ship because of it. (1/30/10)

Thanks for the info "Larry In Luray"). Nice area in your "Neck Of The Woods." But do you remember the old "Washington Caps" ABA B-Ball team that played @ The Coliseum (I think they eventually moved to the Armory - near RFK). And eventually became the Virginia Squires. Who called their games? Anyone know? Ciao 4 Now Rusty (1/30/10)

Listened to the majority of Donnie Simpson's last show and heard quite a heartfelt e-mail he read from his former side-kick Chris Paul..So maybe he didn't leave on bad terms, but still haven't heard anything as to the reason for his abrupt departure...Now I did notice, unless I missed it, no mention, call-in or word from Huggy Lowdown..And considering Donnie gave him his break, I would've thought he'd at least call..But then again, maybe he did contact Donnie, but it just wasn't put on the air..Donnie did mention he was having a big birthday celebration tonight, so maybe he'll be there..All in all, Donnie's a class act and if indeed as part of his contract, he would not be able to keep control of his program, then yes, it was time for him to leave..Wishing him good luck in his future adventures..I'm sure he'll be quite successful. (1/30/10)

I too heard FOX5 talk about a slight dusting of snow..So, I decided to go to a scheduled meeting. When I left to go early this morning, it was light flurries..Left the meeting around 11am and it was snowing quite hard and the streets in Maryland were a complete mess..No evidence that the snow trucks had been out there at all..Guess they heard the snow report from FOX5 as well.. (1/30/10)

Talk about a nostalgia trip today. PLB's post brought back memories of some terrific people that I've worked with. Dave Maynard was my first PD at WHIL in Medford, Massachusetts. He had only recently graduated from Emerson College. A terrific guy and an exceptional talent....Ed Hider did mornings at WMEX while I was there. He was "Fenway" and I was either the 2nd or 3rd Dan Donovan. Johnny Holliday is still in touch with Ed who did very well on the coast as a comedy writer. During my time at the Big X, I became very good friends with Arnie "Woo Woo" Ginsberg, Donn Parker, and talk legend Jerry Williams. What great times!... Johnny Dark (1/30/10)

Donnie Simpson reportedly made 4 million dollars last year that is syndication money WOW. (1/30/10)

As always, Johnny Dark is spot-on, or as the late Jim Karvellas would say, "Bulls-EYE!" Karvellas came with the NBA franchise from Chicago to Baltimore when Abe Pollin bought the team in the early 60's and did their radio and TV p-b-p for a number of years. I remember him calling Bullets games on WTTG in the 60's as well. Baltimore had a lousy team for the most part back then but they were still entertaining - Gus Johnson (not the p-b-p guy) was the first player to shatter a fiberglass backboard with a dunk that I can recall. Earl Monroe - phenomenal. Also, the Bullets would occasionally schedule a regular season game with the Lakers in Charleston, WV, close to Jerry West's home town of Cabin Creek - fat chance of that happening these days. Alas, this was all before firearms in the locker room became part of the culture. Jim Karvellas went on to New York and was the voice of soccer's New York Cosmos when Pele played there in the 70's - - - - - Larry in Luray (1/30/10)

#FAIL - Fox News Weather. Gwen Tolbert and Tony Perkins had been saying a dusting to an inch or so in the DC area on Friday. I HATE weatherpeople. (1/30/10)

Rusty's recollection is right. In the '80s, the former Washington Coliseum's high ceiling made it an ideal candidate for a waste recycling facility as truckload after truckload of trash filled the same rafters that once vibrated to the beat of John, Paul, George and Ringo in their stateside premiere. Fortunately, mega-developer Douglas Jamal is currently in the process of bringing the facility (located at 1140 Third St. NE) back from oblivion with plans for an entertainment district complete with shopping, restaurants, night clubs and residences that utilizes the facade of the original historical building. According to a 2007 article in the Washington Business Journal, "Miguel Uline, a millionaire who operated an ice business, built it in 1941 as the home of the Washington Lions hockey team. The arena has also been a skating rink, a basketball stadium, a concert venue and a midget auto race track." When the Fab Four begat the "British Invasion" on February 11th, 1964, the former Uline Arena had been renovated and rechristened as "Washington Coliseum." (1/30/10)

Mark, this could go on forever but, Bruce Bradley was the best jock I ever heard, ever worked with and will ever know. If you want a treat go to www.reelradio.com go to search and type in Bruce Bradley, There are very few airchecks of him around. You will find him delightful, witty, timely, and funny and a joy to listen to. He now lives in Arizona. Dave Maynard resides in Hernando Florida and Dick Summer the last I heard was in Detroit. Arnie "Woo Woo" Ginsberg was a pioneer and legend while with WMEX...You mentioned Ed Hider, you know when he left WBZ he went to LA and did mucho VO work. I've lost track of him. You have mentioned a lot of others I never had the pleasure of working with but, I'm certain they were all great contributors to the industry. My how things have changed. On another note, Donnie Simpson is one of our finest and he will move on to bigger things, he's that type..a good guy, a professional and well liked. You know this new crop of broadcasters should take the time to check out www.reelradlio.com. That's where all of the legends of radio can be heard, Holliday,Harve Moore, Don Geronimo, Greaseman...etc. . Who knows, maybe some lessons can be had. Again thanks for your posts and your kind words PLB:0) (1/30/10)

I wonder if the Coliseum has experienced a vandalism problem at all due to Beatle fans. More than once I've been tempted to head to that part of town with a cold chisel just to knock off a small fragment of concrete for keepsies, but always have considered the ramifications. Evidently the building is less of a mecca than the Ed Sullivan Theater in NYC to the fans. On the subject of Beatles, Ringo Starr was on the Fallon Show a couple of nights ago. I don't know who handles the audio mix for that show, but it was abysmal. Ringo's singing voice - while hardly in tune as usual - was hardly heard above the overmixed drums. (1/30/10)

To the poster who said Joel Chaseman was a play-by-play announcer for the Bullets, unless my memory is shot, my dear friend the late Jim Karvellas held that job. Jim came with the franchise when it moved from Chicago to Baltimore. We spent a lot of time together as we were neighbors and I was also the Public Address announcer for the Bullets their last years in Baltimore.....Johnny Dark (1/30/10)

For many years, the Mutual Broadcasting System was America’s fourth radio network. Here's a link to a website that remembers Mutual Radio misterk60.com (1/30/10)

Nice to read of old venues. BTW, is the old DC Coliseum still standing? The last I heard it was basically used as a garbage dump. Sad as it was where The Beatles performed their first ever US concert. Rusty Gibson (1/30/10)

Time dulls the memory. I knew KYS had a black owner when Donnie left, and i recalled his comments correctly, just had the wrong owner. KYS was not owned by NBC at the time of Donnie's departure. (1/30/10)

Hey, just thought about it. First, Donnie Simpson will definitely be missed in the mornings, I know at least for myself. But, he did mention we will probably see him soon. I thought about that, and could it be possible that he could fill that void on ABC 7 (WJLA) at 10am in the fall? I mean, with Cynne already there (and doing a great job!), I wonder if that could possibly be in the works for a local entertainment type morning show? - Michael in Upper Marlboro (1/30/10)

Dave's response: I wouldn't be surprised to see Donnie jump to a local TVer, or do a national TV show either syndicated or on a cable net. Maybe to Oprah Winfrey's new OWN network with Discovery?

To the poster asking about the old Steve Allen Show on Westinghouse. Little known facts, the executive producer of that show was none other than Joel Chaseman, who later would become General Manager of WINS in New York. One of his early hires was a kid from Cleveland Johnny Holliday. Perhaps his biggest hire here in Washington at channel 9 was the late, great, Glen Brenner who he saw doing week end work in Philadelphia. Joel was also one of the first play by play broadcaster's for the Baltimore Bullets and wound up as President of Post News Week. Wonderful man who is retired and living in Potomac and can be found cheering on the Wizzards and Terrapins at Verizon and Comcast Centers (1/30/10)

PLB, Paul Bicknell....thank you for prompt response to questions about WBZ and WMEX. You mentioned Bruce Bradley. I've heard recordings and agree he was terrific---glad he is still around. Always thought he was a natural major talent. Dave Maynard used to do guest shots on WBZ up until a few years ago, and various recorded spots to grace their airwaves, as well. Talents such as these enhanced that operation and significantly contributed to the image which it enjoys even today. I don't think you could find any better role models anywhere. Larry Glick was a lot of fun!!! All he had to was be there. Friends tell me about Norm Nathan when he used to do an. all night show on another station. in Boston in the 1960's when Salty Brine was doing mornings on WPRO in Providence and Paul James handled afternoons there. . I used to hear Norm Nathan when he used to have a weekend show. on WBZ "from his not overly ostentacious studio"...what an entertaining guy, and a unique wit. Talkshowwise, David Brudnoy and Joe Sullivan were exceptional whatever the topic. All of them had something in common and that's class., style and grace., and a winsome sense of humor.. The "Squire Dee" who was mentioned previously working with The Founders Corporation run by John Shaheen and Bill Donovan of earlier OSS-CIA days. also was known as Squire D. Rushnell at WBZ before WLS-TV and ABC-TV network endeavors. He also used to work with former WHAM Rochester Chief Announcer, Dean Harris, who had been a major morning drive personality in the tradition of Willard Scott & Ed Walker. Harris was the breakfast bar, timekeeper host of WPAW and WAGE in Syracuse before the call letters were changed to WHEN allowing the Leesbug station to assume the identity when it was on the air. Thanks again, dcrtv & Paul Bicknell (PLB-Davy Jones of WPGC and WBZ) Mark Eastwood (and friends) (1/29/10)

The theatre for Steve Allen's Westinghouse late night show in the '60s was indeed on Vine at Fountain in Hollywood. It was owned by ABC at the time, although it was known as the 1313 Vine St. Studio (and was originally a Mutual Radio Network Studio). A Google search also produced this info: "I loved his Westinghouse show (the one he did in the theater across from the Hollywood Ranch Market). I still remember when his crew acted out 'The Longest Day' in the market using vegetables as hand grenades, or when they made Allen 'the world's largest tea bag' and dumped him into a vat of water and lemon slices." " Steve Allen's live studio was across the street from the market & he often did a live-cam on the hippies & weirdos & ordinairies that mystify when you're observing in anoniminty (sp?) & added his commentary of what they were thinking.""Ah, the old Hollywood Ranch Market on Vine. Anyone remember it? It was at the site currently housing a Staples and El Pollo Loco." His director for that show was a very young Steve Binder who was responsible in later years for some remarkable "big event" TV productions. Binder discusses his role in Steve Allen's show during the first part of a four-part interview at: www.youtube.com (By the way, Hollywood has a theatre known as the Steve Allen Theatre at 4773 Hollywood Boulevard.) (1/29/10)

Hello, for the person who was wondering where the Steve Allen Show was produced--the theater was on Vine Street--I think the address was in the 1100s. Yes, it was by a farmer's market but not the famous one at 3rd and Fairfax. I think the Group W Westinghouse show ran for several years. He later did a show in color at KTLA's studios which were owned by Gene Autry. Hope that helps. Keith (1/29/10)

Recent posts about WBZ brought back fond memories of the year (1967) I spent in Boston as a Navy enlisted man aboard the USS Keywadin, ATA 213, a seagoing tugboat. BZ was the station of choice on the quarterdeck when we were in port. I remember Morning Man Carl DeSuze followed by Davey Maynard, the consumate jock Bruce Bradley in the evening and Dick Summer (who can still be heard on TV voice-over work nationwide) after midnight. The reference to "Woo Woo" would be Arnie "Woo Woo" Ginsberg who I remember from WRKO. The morning Albert DeSalvo, The Boston Strangler, escaped from Waltham Prison, WBZ warned women in the Boston area to stay inside and make no contact with strangers until The Strangler was back behind bars. He was caught several days later hitchhiking in a Navy uniform he had bought at an Army-Navy surplus store, making travel difficult for someone on an E3's pay. Then there was the BZ bulletin that someone had stolen an MTA subway train, a crime with limited getaway route options. Thanks for the memories of a time when radio was allowed to be great. And WBZ, Boston was.--JL (1/29/10)

Mark alot of what you've mentioned probably did happen while I was at BZ, but I was really not aware of it, I was very young, married and had a child to support. All my efforts were at being the best I could be, surrounded by the best there was. The "Jocks" at BZ during my time were terrific mentors, esepecially Dave Maynard. As mentioned we still are in touch.Bruce Bradley was my GOD...He was the reason I wanted to be in radio, and we still chat by email, he's 75 now...but just as sharp. LOL. I don't remember most of the people mentioned, though John Shaheen does ring a bell. The Group W logo was starting just as I left...the ID at that time was This is WBZ/WBZA Springfield. Ahhh, the memories! The "other Bob Kennedy was a very nice person and he was launching about that time too. PLB:0) (1/29/10)

Paul Bicknell, WBZ, WPGC, sorta WMEX...thanks for follow-up substance & continuity...your narrative adds to the history. When you refer to "Mac Richmond," it fills in the picture that anyone would be lucky to find anywhere, Wasn;t that the era of "The Westinghouse Electric Company"as they were about to launch their "Group W logo Identity?" I hear that might have also been the era of "Contact PM" with "The Other Bobby Kennedy on WBZ (Radio)".....some say that was the inspiration for "Program PM," "Evening Magazine." Eye Witness News:" etc," sort of the springboard of the beginning of "the halo" which keeps tv stations still tickin with a variety of stuff, noteably such stations as Baltimore's Channel 13....and it would be appropriate to mention the name of Jerry Turner in the aura...... and some good managers who earned their spurs and continue to bring something to the room.... Steve Kamatian who had been in charge of the Newport outlets, serves as an example..and "The Broadcast House" variations.. Oh, by the way, at WBZ, did you ever run across, "Squire Dee,' who used to be at that station in upstate New York, WFBL. when it was was run by "The Founders Corp." headed by OSS/CIA alumni, Bill Donovan and John Shaheen? .....not to be confused with "Donovan," "Woo Woo", or "Fenway" at Mac (Max's) "Furniture Warehouse" with the wired bells and whistles and unusual pattern., cut out of vinyl from the old "Jan & Arnie Schmata Shop." Thank you for the meaninful input, Mark Eastwood (with a little help from my friends).... (1/29/10)

Seeing that ad for Steve Allen's evening show reminded me of a question I wanted to pose to the group. Back in the early '60s, Steve did a syndicated late-night show for Westinghouse which ran on Channel 9 at 11:30 p.m. It was recorded in Hollywood. Does anyone know the name and/or location of the theater he used for the show? It was a block away from the old Farmer's Market location, but not being an Angelino I'm not that familiar with Hollywood. (1/29/10)

Dave, Nice column in Press Box! You had someone in your mailbox ask where Bob Carpenter lived in the off season --- He and his wife live in Tulsa, OK. He does University of Oklahoma sports in the offseason. Cheers, Jim (1/29/10)

IF Pam has accepted you I withdraw my "beatch" remark. She's hawt... (1/29/10)

Dave's response: I think I was accepted technically, and theoretically rejected. Mixed messages, to be sure.....

In reference to Dave's front page story about the Comcast/NBC merger...Comcast promises to "beef up programming for children and minority viewers." Wow, Chris Matthews could do a show called "the I FORGOT HE WAS BLACK TONIGHT HOUR". (1/29/10)

Dave, It says you and Pam Brown are friends on both of your Facebook pages. I think her email to you was actually pretty funny. Give her a break. I know it makes a better story if she 'rejected' you, but lets be fair here. (1/29/10)

Dave's response: I stand corrected. When reading what Pam wrote, I thought she's rejected me. Thanks Pam!

The Fall '09 numbers are in..and Great Scott's Urban Oldies station is looking pretty damn good. Debuting with a 3.7. Of course, since stripping the simulcast away from B101.7, the Bethany Beach signal took a huge hut dropping to a 0.8. And Hot Country 107.7...come on GS..get a clue! Try something DIFFERENT! And, congrats to MTS for scoring the 2 share on the The Duck..too bad the audio still sounds like shit! (1/29/10)

www.facebook.com per Baltimore Media Blog: "NBC can't blame for Conan for this....The Thursday 1/28/09 lineup TANKED. The CW posted a 1.6 in the coveted 18-49 demographic, but NBC could only muster a 1.5. NBC only edged out THE CW in Total viewers by some 900,000 odd viewers. "NBC TO FORGIVE LOAN TO FIRM OWNED BY BROWN, OTHERS" Washington Post - Saturday, February 25, 1995, by Jerry Knight:. "National Broadcasting Co. has agreed to forgive most of a $10 million loan it made to Albimar Communications Inc., a company owned by Commerce Secretary Ronald H. Brown and several partners, NBC officials confirmed this week NBC made the loan in 1988 when it sold Washington radio station WKYS-FM to Albimar, whose owners include James Kelly III, husband of former D.C. mayor Sharon Pratt Kelly, and Bertram M. Lee, a Boston broadcasting executive and longtime friend of Brown's. Albimar's investment in WKYS has proved to be a losing one. The station lost its top disc jockey (Donnie Simpson in 1993) and dropped in the ratings while the market for radio stations soured. Albimar has agreed to sell the station to Radio One Inc., a company headed by local radio talk show host Cathy Hughes, for about $8.5 million less than it paid. To facilitate the sale, NBC has agreed to absorb much of the loss by forgiving the loan, sources familiar with the transaction said. An NBC spokeswoman said the company decided to forgive Albimar's debt because the loan was long overdue and the network's lawyers determined there was little chance of collecting. If NBC, a unit of General Electric Co., had not agreed to write off much of the debt, Albimar probably would have filed for bankruptcy protection and NBC would have gotten nothing, she said. ..." Natinoals Web site says Charlie Slowers has two homes one in Alex Va, and Palam Harbor Fl. They don't say where Bob Carpenter lives. (1/29/10)

Donnie could be a good "fit" at 102.3 and yea I like the idea of him going to 94.7 (rebirth of HFS) if they switch to a classic rock and soul format. But after listening this morning to his last show Donnie is TOO GOOD for those stations. He has the experience, knowledge and money so he should just start his own station WDSR (Donnie Simpson Radio). And I know the music on his station will be great because Donnie knows his music! (1/29/10)

Mike in Fairfax, if I am not mistaken, neither Slowes nor Carpenter live in the DC area during the off season, which is likely why they were not on the ESPN 980 panel. I agree that hearing Weber, Herzong and Holliday would have been more interesting. But I found the panel entertaining nonetheless. As for the Baltimoron knocking Pollin, shut up. Pollin was a great philanthropist and a visionary, but no one ever said he was much of a team owner. But moving the team out of Baltimore just made good business sense. Get over it. (1/29/10)

OOBBEE says: I agree with the last post regarding JKF. The new format has ruined the Junks anyway. I am so sick of classic rock into and then straight sports. This station’s ratings will never change from this point on. In fact, it has probably peaked because of the disaster of what the Skins were last season and the Gilbert Arenas shit. What sports station in the country would not want those topics to kick off a sports talk format? Think about the middle of the Nat’s season? The guys on 980 have more freedom than the Junks. Mr. Tony and the PM drive guys mix it up with non-sports topics which make them more fun to listen too. The Junks were kept as an anchor. Their balls were cut off. Why keep them? I am telling you that the old JFK guys on a big AM talker would work. You just need a good signal to cover Manassas to Baltimore. IPO anyone? (1/29/10)

I notice once again that WJFK is still in the second tier in the 12+ all day ratings. Ho Hum...I realize that they are probably doing well in their respective target demos but really is there any upward change since the firing of the Mike O'meara crew? Probably not. With the release of Donnie Simpson, is it long before old Sam Rogers let's the Junkies and their $265,000 each a year price tag go too? Word is he hates their show because it's the only show that doesn't jibe format wise with the Fan's new quick fire format. And the rumors that JFK will be sold to Snyder still persist, though no one at JFK would agree, they say that management says it isn't true. Why would Sam lie to his employees? (1/29/10)

"The Donnie & Mike Show." What a Fab idea. Rusty Gibson (still a crotchety "old Fart) (1/29/10)

Re: "Comcast Add 32's HD" I probably would have led with something like "Comcast cuts yet another PBS affiliate from their basic (lifeline) service" I assume that this is part of some long-term Comcast strategy Comcast to make subscribers pay more for PBS channels. Diane in PG (1/29/10)

Dave, Albimar Communications owned WKYS in 1993, not Radio One...Donnie worked for Albimar; he was on-air and also Vice President of programming. (1/29/10)

"Sheehan is one of the few sports broadcasters in town that uses his brain when he forms an opinion (Czaban and Haber are the only others) but he must have had brainlock when he came up with today's idea [a remote from a DC resaturant consisting of a joint interview with local play-by-play guys Steve Buckhantz, Larry Michael and Steve Kolbe]." Kevin Sheehan may not have been involved in the selection of those particular guests for WTEM's broadcast - I've heard 'Lunch With a Legend' on at least one sports talk station in another market so it might be one of those nationwide deals put together by ESPN. The three guests yesterday even remarked that they didn't consider themselves legends and a show featuring Frank Herzog, Ron Weber and either Johnny Holiday or Rich Chvotkin would have probably been a better match for the concept. Nonetheless, it made for interesting listening with all the anecdotes and insights into the craft of play-by-play announcing. A noticeable omission was any representation from the Nationals, but I guess neither Charlie Slowes nor Bob Carpenter has been in DC long enough to qualify (although Slowes did have an earlier stint as radio voice of the Bullets). Apparently the station has tried to get Tony Kornheiser to participate in this legend series but he's turned them down - they'd probably have to let that control freak select the questions for Sheehan and Thom Loverro to ask as a condition of his appearance ("at what point in your childhood did you know that you were destined for greatness?"). Tomorrow marks the debut of WJFK's new weekly show featuring Brian Mitchell and Shan Shariff (10 AM to 2 PM), and I noticed that 106.7 has begun providing some local programming on Sundays with its Redskins beat reporter Chris Russell hosting a program last week in the morning timeslot previously occupied by Mike Francesa's New York based NFL show (not sure if that's a permanent addition to the schedule). Mike, Fairfax (1/29/10)

The reason for the COMCAST add of WHUT 32 HD channel so late is simply that WHUT finally finished its HD upgrade and FCC recs show they finally got a License to Cover permit for the final HD facility. Up until now, the Comcast head ends probably all had trouble receiving the HD signal. This is one of those few instances where I'll not blame COMCAST for the problem. (1/29/10)

Dear Dave-- I am very confused but I saw on your FB page that Pam DID accept you as a friend. It seems like the email she wrote to you was in jest. Please Explain. She doesn't seem like the kind of girl who likes suck ups. Irene (1/29/10)

Dave's response: Hmmm.....

WKYS was owned by Radio One when Donnie left in 1993. I know because I was there. And Donnie left WKYS because he was upset that a black owned (Cathy Hughes), black managed (Al Liggins) station would not, in his own words, "pay a black man as much as a white owned station would". He said it on the record more than once. (1/29/10)

Dave's response: Thanks. I knew I was right - as usual.....

I love how people want to lay the blame for the dismantling of WPGC at the feet of everyone except Sam Rogers. What success has Sam had? Can we say TITANIC? If anyone needs to be packing boxes today; it is Sam "It's My Candy Store" Rogers. How long can you blame the economy and PPM Sam? Hot 99.5 is kicking your clueless tail, and WHUR another urban station remains in the top 5! (1/29/10)

Why doesn't CBS put Donnie Simpson on Fresh 94.7 with Mike O'Meara, and have the "Donnie and Mike Show?" It might work! (1/29/10)

Dave's response: It's money money money. Donnie makes too much money and they want him gone. Yeah, how about a cool rock and soul oldies outlet on 94.7 with Don Geronimo doing mornings and Donnie Simpson doing afternoons? Great idea but it'll never happen. Not in today's radio environment.....

FOX5 is doing a live stream of Donnie Simpson's show. However, the majority of what they're showing are cable lines and pics of people's feet. (1/29/10)

I have to agree with "Donnie" re the firing of DJ Rico. Jocks have dropped F-bombs on the air everywhere, let through callers who swear and threaten, and on the Spanish side of things say [bullshit] without so much as the batting of an eye. This is unfair, unwarranted and hypocritical. Even worse, it goes another step towards formulaic generic homogenized radio, by removing the element of surprise and turn-on-a-dime show decisions based on 'The Moment.' Yes, radio is a business (God am I tired of hearing that line of fluff) but there needs to be a balance between "By The Book" and "Wouldn't It Be Cool If...?". If this new guy truly is trying to dismantle a great station, he couldn't be doing a better job if he were swinging a wrecking ball. (1/29/10)

Nester is staring a blog series about the state of Baltimore sports media Monday. This is a snipped about Ray Frager from his website. "He didn’t even understand what the Arbitron ratings represented but he knew how to parrot out the statistics, which we’ll prove next week are not even remotely accurate if not outright lies! But we all know that once the lie gets told once, it gets repeated a thousand times." So, Nester is taking the typical shit signal approach (my signal is bad, no one can hear me, so obviously Arbitron is lying." Sure, his website may be the #1 sports website in the region, but all the resources are put behind the website and not the signal. (1/29/10)

A while back I, a Baltimorean, slammed the late Washington Wizards owner, Abe Pollin, as not being such a great sports owner or even a great guy while Washingtonians & idiots here on DCRTV were giving such glowing tributes to the man in the DCRTV mailbag. Boy how times have changed sports fans! Honest Abe ain't what he used to be! HAHA! www.washingtonpost.com (1/29/10)

"Donnie already worked for Radio One once before. Not so sure they would have him back." Donnie Simpson worked for WKYS but they were not owned by Radio One then. (1/29/10)

Dave's response: Guess you're right - WKYS was owned by NBC back then.....

Dave, as a service to the Mailbag readers, would you please offer a new section on the DCRTV website, with the English translation of whatever the hell ThePenis is ranting about now? His most recent rambling, stream of consciousness post truly is an incoherent mystery! At the very least, could you please tell us what meds he's on, so we'll at least be on the same brain chemistry "wavelength". (1/29/10)

Condolences on your facebook rejection by Pamela Brown. What a beatch!! (1/29/10)

Dave's response: Pam Brown will be my Facebook friend if I (DCRTV) suck up to her and Channel 7. So, is that how she views her job as a journalist? To suck up to people? The only way to get viewers for her newscasts is to basically do PR? Quality journalism there at 7, huh!

A DJ fired for doing a mix? Whats next? Terminating techs for flipping a switch? Sounds like 'fish in a barrel' time at WPGC. What if the coming change is worse than we expect?Spanish Rap anyone? Hey wouldn't that be a burrito? Hmmm.... The Burrito Beat on Noventa Sinco Sincoooooo ....sorry,i got carried away...Donnie, no not Simpson (1/29/10)

Attention TV folks, video producers and musicians using wireless mics in the 700 MHz band: Get them up on Craigslist as soon as you can and sell them to the bigger sucker. Five months from now in June, the FCC is finalizing reallocation of that band for broadband and public safety, and any existing wireless mics or transmitters using that frequency range will be ILLEGAL. 700 MHz was once the domain of analog TV (channel 60-67) and a few wireless devices, but now has been staked out for new technologies. Dump that junk on someone who hasn't heard the news as soon as you can. (1/28/10)

"Congrats Dave. You've lowered the mailbag standards even further by allowing the same shitty joke to be posted by the same shitty human being two times." - I agree, Anonymous. Those two purported pictures of Don Geronimo were beyond the pale. In other news, America's Test Kitchen on venerable WETA tonight informed viewers that "tapioca is a very clean flavor." I have always heard much the same but it's good to have confirmation from PBS -- ThePenIsMightier (1/28/10)

Daily Caller Rant - The only douchebag is you. And talk about unattractive - you could use some styling pointers. I along with many others like the DC and wish them great success. Anybody who follows these things knows that the top-rated shows on cable are always crappy kid shows and conservative talk/spin shows (this is just the latest example: www.businessweek.com). And the reason is pretty obvious too: all of those shows have the exact same audience. Adolescent boys who masturbate instead of doing their homework. (1/28/10)

Don Geronimo still in Hawaii? AHHHHH (1/28/10)

I really like the show with Sheehan on SportsTalk 980 but today's show is another example of how 980 misses the mark sometimes. They did a legend lunch show with legends Steve Buckhantz, Larry Michaels, and Steve Colby as the legends. Is it me or does anyone else think of these guys as legends? I sure don't. Sheehan is one of the few sports broadcasters in town that uses his brain when he forms an opinion (Czaban and Haber are the only others) but he must have had brainlock when he came up with today's idea. (1/28/10)

The industry (WBAL) scuttlebutt is that Anita Marks was actually fired from 105.7. I got this from a very reliable source at the station. (1/28/10)

Dave's response: Technically, she wasn't "fired." Her contract wasn't renewed. And that's just fine with CBS Radio, WJZ-FM, Scott Garceau, and many listeners.....

That Tom Allen...LOVED him on Home Improvement!!! -BLP 8-P (1/28/10)

To "Rusty The Crotchety OldFart ". Yes Donnie Simpson did sports at WRC-TV back in the day. His previous DJ gig at KYS was co-located at 4001 Nebraska Ave. at the time. Tom in Wheaton (1/28/10)

Donnie afternoons on WMMJ…a great idea…unfortunately…Radio One can’t afford him. They already have Olivia Fox there and SHE SHOULD be afternoon drive…but the brain trust at R.O. has always been a mystery. They already had an excellent morning show in Baltimore(BIG PHAT)good numbers and they KILLED It for Ricky Smiley. They went from caviar to cornpone. Donnie should relax and enjoy some time off before the next episode. (1/28/10)

Dave's response: If Simpson was to go back to Radio One, it would be smarter to put him on commercial gospel Praise 104.1, WPRS - a station that could use the ratings boost. Soul oldies Magic 102.3, WMMJ, is doing just fine with what it's got.....

Good Lord, Sally Quinn's reading her columns for the entertainment of the blind? Haven't those people suffered enough? What's second prize, TWO Sally Quinn columns? What a waste of newsprint and oxygen . . . sincerely, TMU. (1/28/10)

RE: Isn't it interesting...Cmon a car dealer told you this? Way to go to rattle a bunch of good people needlessly over what is probably made up. More drama from Winchester. Do you just stick your head out of the hole in the ground once every six months or what? (1/28/10)

Dave I understand that people want Donnie to resurface at another station In morning drive, but the problem with radio now Is that a lot of companies are cutting back on salary. Also It Is cheaper to run syndication in morning drive than it is to run the local morning drive show that is why there are so few of them. WPGC is one of the few urban stations in the united states that still has that time slot alotted to local air talent. With Donnie Simpson`s possible salary request, Harvey and Joyner having better ratings than him in morning drive and running there shows is cheaper it is unlikely that at this point that he will do morning drive in D.C. however there is always afternoon drive that would depend on Donnie however. (1/28/10)

I did the “Nighlight Show” sitting in for Dick Summer, due to sickness they kept me much longer, it was a good ride and got me into AFTRA. I then went to WFEA in Manchester NH. Both Charlie Scheu and I got fired…LOL. Went back to WHYN stayed there until they were sold. Landed in SC at WCOS (worst job in my career) Scheu called me and I landed in DC with WPGC. I didn’t work with Tom Allen, though I’ve heard of him. Thanks for the inquiry-PLB:0) (1/28/10)

Well, yeah, Shales is right that Obama gives a good speech. Almost as good as Reagan. Problem is that Obama, unlike Reagan, is a complete empty suit who, it appears, is in way over his head. (1/28/10)

Dave's response: So right! Obama never had the movie actor gig like Reagan did.....

The NBA is the worst league out there, but you have to feel sorry for Wizards fans. They had to put up with years and years of terrible ownership when old Abe was running the team. Now, it appears that Pollin's family is seeking to further F up the team by tanking the deal that old Abe made with Leonsis, who is the last glimmer of hope that the Wiz have. Not only would that screw the Wiz, but it would screw the Caps since Leonsis needs to acquire the arena because, right now, the lease he has is atrocious. (1/28/10)

Regarding 106.7 The Fan using press conference audio from Comcast Sportsnet... I'm pretty sure there is some kind of official agreement with CSN for the Fan to do that. If you listen, their sports updates are from the "Comcast Sportsnet News Desk," even though it's Lurch or Liz doing the updates from the studio. And I've seen commercials for the Fan on CSN. They may have a similar agreement with Fox 5 because the Junkies are always on there, BDK is the movie reviewer for both, etc. I'm pretty sure they have reporters at the Caps games and Wizards games, because if you go to their (kind of crappy) website, they actually have video interviews and reporter standups from all of the Wizards and Caps games. That's actually pretty impressive. All in all, I think they're doing a way better job of covering all of D.C. sports, certainly better than 980 has ever done. (1/28/10)

My mind is clearer now-- at last, all too well, I can see where we all soon will be. If you strip away the myth from the man, you can see where we all soon will be. Sigh. So now another night of the magic box being highjacked by this political nonsense. "The State of the Onion Address", foisted upon us like some sort of national effing holiday or something. "Ladies and Gentleman, the Preziden of the Ubided Slakes"!! YEA, clapclapclap, Blah Blah Blah, Clap Clap Clap. Blah Blah Blah. (Half the crowd-- Clap Clap Clap. Half the crowd--stony silence) Repeat about 50 times. ... and God bless these United States. And next week nobody remembers, let alone believes, all of the false promises and list of honey-do's. Don't get me wrong. I ain't schillin' for the not-so GOP by any means. I've got no dog in this particular fight, as it were. In the spirit of full transparency, my politics skew Libertarian and my economics are decidedly Austrian. Now, that having been said, here's what I want to see from our leadership elite. I want us to elect a president that pledges to promote a new spirit of cooperation, of inclusion, of respect for all opinions and policy ideas. Oh, wait. We already did that. Ok, then, I want us to elect representatives and senators that pledge a new era of cooperation, of transparency, of open and honest work for us, the people, and not for special interest groups. Oh, wait. We already did that. Ok, then, I want us to have a Congress that pledges to provide thoughtful, disciplined consideration of all ideas; of careful, methodical, and open debate of all proposed legislation. Of bills placed on the net at least three days before a vote so that all of America could at least read the thing and comment before they voted on it. Oh, wait. We already did that. Anybody else kind of throw up in the back of their throat when that crow Diane Feinstein suggested that the only reason we the sheeple are not supporting this abortion of a health care reform bill is because they, the smartest people in the room, didn't do an adequate enough job of explaining it to our small, simple dullard minds? We need cameras in every committee meeting on Capitol Hill unless it's a matter of national security. These people need to know we're watching every minute. The days of these back room, dead of night, Christmas Eve votes needs to end. Thank God for the radio, internet, and other alternative media sources, or these idiots would be sitting back laughing at the masses ever more than we've got now. As Fred Reed refers to them, "535 commoditized temple monkeys, pawing through the ruins of America, searching for bribes". And you've got the head monkey leading the charge. And before you get all "that's racisisisim"-- I'm black. Ain't that an inconvenient truth, dog? A darkie with a conservative bent. OK, back to your stupor, people. There's got to be a recorded episode of "Ax Men" or "Sons of Anarchy" that I haven't watched yet. One can hope. "These are not the droids you're looking for". John, in Baltimore--Out. (1/28/10)

Isn't it interesting that two competing broadcasters, Prettyman and Centennial, would be coordinating their layoffs with each other? My bullshit detector is all the way in the red on this one. And since WINC-FM doesn't want to act on DCRTV Dave's suggestion to put Mike O'Meara in mornings, maybe the station will be the new home of Donnie Simpson. Yeh, right! (1/28/10)

"Leonsis Delt Setback In Bid For Wizards, Verizon Center" - I hope it's just a negotiation ploy on the part of the Pollin estate. You couldn't find a more classier owner than Leonsis. It would be a real shame for the team and the region if this fell through. (1/28/10)

Hey RAUL? (Very Clever-DUH) and others, I said I would only post with my sig. I plan to stick to that. So, to all the paranoids, STOP reading into other posts. They are NOT me. Lashing out at Dave Hughes is silly too!!! Thanks again Mark. PLB:0) (1/28/10)

For PLB: You mentioned Mac Richmond talked to you about working at WMEX. I grew up in the Boston area and don’t remember having heard you on WBZ… though I am familiar with your fine work at WPGC. What years were you at ‘BZ and what shift did you do? And when you were at PGC did you work with Tom Allen who later went to WMEX? (1/28/10)

I, along with the rest of the Peanuts gang, find ThePenis's use of the slang term for female genitalia offensive. - Signed, Lucy Van Pelt (P.S. - my lesbian lover Chaz prefers the term 'steamy peach') (1/28/10)

If Dave showed good judgement, awareness, and sensitivity on every mailbag post we'd never be graced with the nonsensical ramblings of ThePenis and PLB (including his army of fake names). Remember, there can not be good if there isn't evil. Dave's subpar judgement at times makes good posts live in this forum. By posting drivel from the aforementioned, we are able to see the quality posts much better. -Dr. Raul Tricknell (1/28/10)

From Politico: After the State of the Union speech, MSNBC's Chris Matthews quickly drew criticism for saying that he "forgot [Obama] was black tonight for an hour." While that one line made its way around the Internet, much of the context — a larger point about the presidency and race — got lost. So now, Matthews explained what he meant on MSNBC. "I think he's done something wonderful," Matthews said. "I think he's taken us beyond black and white in our politics, wonderfully so, in just a year." (1/28/10)

"To you sir, don't judge me from the angry posters that can't forget. My clients know me, and maybe you should.PLB:0)" -I actually agree with PLB here. Don't judge him from other people's posts. Judge him from HIS pompeous, ego ridden, resentful, false identity laden posts. (1/28/10)

Donnie already worked for Radio One once before. Not so sure they would have him back. (1/28/10)

I'm surprised that The PenIs hasn't chimed in with some stupid (and vulgar) comment about Apple's new iPad - what with his fixation and constant references to "pelt". Every few days he seems to find it necessary to use that term. It’s offensive and reflects his obvious contempt for women. Given that, I can understand his frequent use of the term in his posts, but Dave, your allowing it shows poor judgment and a lack of awareness/sensitivity, on your part. nytimes.com (1/28/10)

Dave: I've been reading over some of the postings about how poor the Arenas coverage was on both of our sportstalk radio stations and I would like to go back to what I originally said six month's ago. We know ESPN980 is not very good but more importantly, the reason why 106.7 isn't much better is because some of the old group from 980 now works at WJFK! Recycling talent or producers is a sign of laziness and utter convenience by management. WJFK is never going to be the area's top sportstalk station because they will always employ people who've left ESPN980. If you think about- it, ESPN980 used to miss Redskins or Wizards' press conferences all the time. It's only taken them 5-6 years to realize they better start covering the area teams on spot news stories if they're to be taken seriously. Well, WJFK is still learning how to do things and in time, they will learn how to cover a live press conference. (1/28/10)

I'm a bit surprised to hear of the reported cuts at Prettyman given their fairly respectable showings in the Arbitrons of late. (1/28/10)

And judging by your recent comments, Rusty, a P-Diddy concert is not one if your favorite places on Earth. (1/28/10)

From OOBBEE: Here’s a thought…. Do an IPO to buy a station in DC. Even an AM station with decent DC (Maybe Balt?) coverage. Wait till Donni is free of CBS and give him the mornings. Let Big O take the mid-day (Maybe with Robb? Or, until Fad Pukes and stained T-Shirt get let go with mush mouth) and let Mike and the Gang (Buzz, Joe, BA, Girl, 20 minutes of Belcher a day??). Think about it…… I like me those demos…… JFK will never rule. It dies on 95 north of the beltway. Maybe another station in Baltimore? Dukes and Mike and Donni always killed in Charm City!! Or, maybe 1500 which covers it all!!! I would buy that IPO. Who could not sell the loyalty that I have seen the last two years for these guys on line and at appearances. Just the appearance value could be a major source of income! Give the talent stock (Hello Howard) as incentive to keep salaries modest to start. Base salaries with ratings bonuses a major source of the pie. (1/28/10)

I understand that President Nino left the Carter to give his big talk. I'll hear about it on Grandy and Andy in the Morning (Hi, Nehman!). Instead, I chilled with two reruns of The Unit on Channel 20, with the Big Black President from 24. Isn't that something. I was in good hands. Pelt!!! --- ThePenIsMightier (1/28/10)

Re: WEMD This is an STA extension request. The FCC would not grant a power level they believe is likely to produce interference. I don't think the FCC STA grant is a big deal or improper action by the FCC staff, based on the information certified by the licensee. If someone has a problem with the STA grant, and they find interference from the STA operation, they should complain to the FCC. It is not productive to insult FCC engineers, or complain about the morality of the licensee. Instead, submit complaints to the FCC about the licensee, especially if you can document that the licensee lied to the FCC. Think Al Capone and the IRS... (1/28/10)

I saw the post from Mark Eastwood. You are right, I was with WPGC during the Richmond era, I met Mac (Max) twice in Boston while with WBZ, both times he was attempting to move me from BZ to WMEX. I was terrified of him and his reputation. Then, after the WBZ gig ended I was on the "beach" (unemployed) when Charlie Scheu contacted me about the opening at WPGC. Knowing that Richmond was the owner, I was leary of working in DC. I was assured by both Charlie and GM (Bob Howard) that Max had little or no involvement with the DC station so I took the job. I never saw Max the entire time I was with the station. Working with Bob Howard, Charlie Scheu, Harve Moore, Bob Raleigh, Jim Collinson and others was one of the finest moments in my career. Thanks for the kind words. Yes, Johnny Holliday is the epitome of great talent. By the way, just for the hell of it, on my way out of DC today after a session at Clean Cuts in DC I thought of the unkind post today.POST (I see quite a few PLB posts this morning. Guess someone doesn't have any voice over work to get to today." I don't know how many clients PLB has, but I have to wonder how many of them realize what a pompous prick he often comes across as? While I've never met him, if his performance in this venue is any indication of his personality, I doubt I'd ever want to. (1/27/10) To you sir, don't judge me from the angry posters that can't forget. My clients know me, and maybe you should.PLB:0) (1/28/10)

RE: Ingraham and the new producer....does this mean that Tom Elliott left the show. Well, looks like this producer can kiss his social life goodbye...22 hour work days are NOT worth it! (1/28/10)

So Brett Haber was at the anchor desk again tonight at 7:00. Did WUSA demote him to substitute anchor? And do they not have anyone better to fill in? They must really not have any talent at Broadcast House anymore. And then, speaking of lack of talent, on the late news, Anita Brikman was reading an introductory piece about the Toyota Recall, and she said (as did the on-screen graphic) that they would have a feature about the subject coming up at 11:13. The only problem was that it was 11:24 when she read this! The news started late because of the State of the Union address, and I guess someone didn't get the memo. WUSA: my, how the mighty have fallen. -BG (1/28/10)

Is Melissa Carlson stiil with WBAL ? (1/28/10)

While I know it is mostly an accounting move, it's still a shame to see Donnie Simpson being forced. I agree that moving to 102.3 would be a great move, there are some issues with that that Mr. Hughes did point out. In addition, would Tom Joyner be so willing to move to another slot? Regardless, I hope for Mr. Simpson the same thing that I do for Conan O'Brien - that they do their usual great job and make their former employers regret their decisions. Mr. Simpson is a true class act and an undeniable local legend. I'm with Coco...and Donnie. Sincerely, James (1/28/10)

Rockville radio executive Bill Quinn (Michael Q Anthony) gave Robert Scorpion the initial nod to do morning drive on ALL Hit WINX. That was awhile ago ...before WPGC, the first time around,... and prior to the time that an erstwhile distaff member got a shot at am drive.on WINX.. as part of the that Q crew: attribution or no. Before the so called" new normal" parts of the WINX format and staff were" borrowed" "lifted"... and obstensibly, the station was never appropriately aknowledged for what it started. Meanwhile, there were the menschs, the music mavens of tin pan alley in the Brill Bldg in NYC in the golden age of top 40 who thought of WINX as the "New Haven" of the Washington market ."Getting it played on WINX was a wonderful way to break a new record and getting the other stations to sit up and take notice and do the same in Washington and scores of other cities across the nation. The mavens recognized the value of WINX exposure and ackowledged it because it helped get bullets in Billboard and Cashbox Magazines resulting in national hit songs. Menschs of the industry expressed their thanks and appreciation to the historic, legendary call letters, WINX, the station on THE PIKE that could!" Meanwhile, talk persists that Rob Michael (Scorpion) air checks exist along with MQA & co. to further perk the curiosity of the collectors. " Fill in he blank where "Scorpion" pops up next..".maybe M Hughes old station WIOT in Toledo if they go rhythmic?" Dave's site, we're. sure will have it first , just like always As for where to find rare airchecks, it may not hurt to reach Neal Elliis of Sounds Like Yesterday at the Yesterday USA network site.,.Mr Ellis who provides what you hear on "The Big Broadcast" with Ed Walker also has other websites which may be worth a try?. Some random reflections so far this year: talents in a class all their own like George Michael ... such a wonderful legacy in Washington and beyond. George was great and a great loss! And...there's another multi talent you could picture anywhere, coast to coast as the definitive sound of classic contemporary radio and so much more...and that's Johnny Holliday, radio, tv, movies, the stage and screen, a unique talent who transcends the local or regional arena at this very moment. "Out Of The Past"was the title of one of great film noir classics with Bob Mitchum, ( who used to call Maryland home), Jane Greer and Kirk Douglas and it's the name of another vehicle not to miss Those behind this show are to be highly commended for their efforts which now also includes among the others, the irrepressible, savvy Dave Hughes . The who's who guest list warrants a large studio orchestra and a box set for future gift giving!!! Paul Bicknell (Davy Jones) Special speaks volumes in any sell and others do too . We heard that Mac (Max) Richmond of WMEX in Boston was also involved in the ownership of WPGC around that time of Bicknell, speaking of New England connections, not to forget WPRO, which along with 2 or 3 others were absolutely tops in that part of the world. Oh, sure, there's more to come. We'll try to bring tid bits to this tops in taps Busby Berkley tapestry. which may even be immediately intelligible to some. before they get this far into the copy. Yours for more meaningful moments in the media as 2010 marches on! " Westbrook Van Voorhees (Van Vorhis) where are you?" Mark Eastwood (1/27/10)

Hey "HitMan": Thanx for today's lesson. What an honor to read your comments that were directed to me. As an admitted "Wieber" I sincerely appreciate all constructive info when it comes to "The Biz"! Thanks, Rusty... BTW "OC", WEBR Radio and Camden Yards are 2 of my favorite places on the planet (1/27/10)

Driving home from work and I was listening to The Sports Reporters on 980. They immediately break into the GM of The Wizard’s press conference regarding Gilbert Arenas. As it starts, I flip right over to The Fan at 106.7 and they are in commercials for at least two minutes and then come back with a normal broadcasting and then the “breaking news” that the GM was suppose to step up to the podium any second even though he was reading his statement live at least five minutes earlier live on 980. When they broke in, he was already asking questions. At the end, they thanked “their friends” at Comcast for the feed. Isn’t 106.7 the home of the Wizards in DC? It appeared that the first question was asked by either a regular on the 980 show or one of their own reporters. Lindsey asked one. Why no real bodies for 106.7? Just like when 106.7 was beaten to the punch on Redskin news this past season. Is CBS is too cheap to cover sports properly in DC or is 106.7 run like a college station? (1/27/10)

Today ( 1/27/2010 ) I heard from a friend of mine ... who works for the Miller Auto Group in Martinsburg saying come Monday expect some mass layoffs at Martinsburg's Prettyman Broadcasting ( WLTF-WEPM-WICL ) and at Centennial Winchester ( WINC AM/FM-104.9/105.5 The Bone ). The Miller Auto Group is a major client for both station groups. (He) was telling me between Prettyman and Centennial expect at least 20 to lose their jobs including some very well known names in the region. Sad !!!!! (1/27/10)

Ref: "Having already removed Anita" Hey Rusty my friend surely you know that most programmers and managers in radio and tv have all of this type of stuff on the back burner in the event "Anita" or "Scott" gets hit by a bus on the way to work. I know I use to have the next 5 dj jingles and promos already cut and ready to roll....the next dj's air name was what ever one I had TM produce and next on the reel from the jingle company. Promos - I even had jingles and promos cut for who might replace the Hitman & Company morning show in the event that I might not make it to work and on the air one morning. I use to play them once in awhile for Captain Jim at 100KHI, One was _____ & Company in the morning. cut one was The Captain & Company, cut two was Brian K. Hall & Company and lastly was cut three Phil Dirt & Company. That's how we rolled back then. I know it may sound cruel, but hey never get caught with your pants down. Love ya Rusty (mean it!) J.J. Laughlin was saying "shinny" last night. Meaning that the Islanders were not hitting in the least bit. (1/27/10)

I have a question that I am not sure if anyone can answer. I was watching the Caps last night vs NYI on Verizon channel 1, which I think is CSN+. But I know it was not in HD. After watching the Caps score their 7th goal, I thought I heard the "locker" Craig Laughlin ?? make the following comment: While after another Caps goal it is just a Shi$$y night for the Islanders. I said to myself, he just didn't say that did he? So I went back on my DVR and listened to it again 3 times. I am %100 positive that is what he said. Has or did anyone say anything or complain about this to the CSN? I thought it is funny and figured someone would have called them on the carpet about it. Thanks and keep up the good work, read your website every day. Matt (1/27/10)

Las Vegas -- Special to DCRTV. Rush Limbaugh has been in town since Sunday. The judges, minus comedian Paul Rodriguez who dropped out, will be introduced at a news conference today. (1/27/10)

My thoughts and predictions for DC TV... I could picture the following: NBC 4 airing "LX TV" at Noon, following the 11AM midday news... 4 airing "Days of our Lives" at 3PM, and "Ellen" at 5PM. The 4PM and 6PM newscasts remaining in place. 4 debuting local TV newscasts in HD, with a new NBC Nightly News/WNBC-TV inspired news set. FOX 5 picking up "The Doctor's" and "Extra"... "The Rachael Ray Show" moving over to WUSA-TV 9. 5 adding more news... new 4-5AM news (branded as "FOX 5 Wake-Up News")... new 9-10AM non-news show (branded as "Good Day Washington")... the 6PM going full-hour (re-branding as "FOX 5 News at 6"). 5 also airing full-hour of "Judge Judy" at 4PM. ABC 7 airing a new local non-news show, or syndicated talk show at 10AM... the Noon midday news going full-hour (airing from Noon-1PM)... 7's newscasts adopting the "Action News" moniker, and the current news set also getting a much needed makeover. 7 considering getting a new 4PM news in September, 2011. WUSA-TV 9 airing "Let's Make a Deal" at 9AM, and a new local non-news show at 10AM (adopting the "Capitol & Company" moniker)... "The Young & the Restless" at 3PM, and "Dr. Oz" at 5PM. 9 dumping the current 9AM and 5PM newscasts. 9 also bring back the popular "Eyewitness News" moniker, and dumping the current "9 News Now" branding. DC 50 (The CW) considering getting into the local TV news game, with a morning newscast and/or 10PM newscast... or 50 airing "The Daily Buzz" from 6-9AM. The CW considering saving "The Bonnie Hunt Show" as well. Thanks, Eric from GA (1/27/10)

Dave: Any comment on Rush Limbaugh being in Las Vegas this week to judge the Miss America contest? I would've expected some comment from you. Maybe a picture of Rush in a bikini, or something. Ha-ha! Christian (1/27/10)

Dave's response: DCRTV did report that when it was first announced. I don't know, but being a judge for the Miss America pageant is just one step closer to being a "has-been" in the entertainment biz. What next? Rush doing late-night infomercials on basic cable channels? Hmmm.....

See the Post Metro section today? B2 - "No Dancing With Tom"... B3 - "Dancer's Suite over Park Service arrest..."... Same author, same article mostly. PATHETIC! G (1/27/10)

This sucks for rugby fans who have been paying $14.95 a month to see rugby on Setanta. Fox Soccer Channel already cancelled rugby once on that channel. www.setanta.com (1/27/10)

Has anyone checked out MIX 106-5's HD-2 channel up in Baltimore? It's been leaning more dance lately and they're welcoming people over from other dance stations that have changed format. Seems like they are taking both a local and national approach with the stream. Pretty cool. Here's the link. www.mix1065.net (1/27/10)

Hi Dave, Donnie Simpson would be good at Majic 102.3. If I were WMMJ I would move Tom Joyner to afternoons and let Donnie have the morning show - he will also reunite with his old buddies Chris Paul and Huggy LowDown and be the number one morning show in DC again! (1/27/10)

Dave's response: The question is whether Radio One would be willing to pay Simspson's high salary, or would he be willing to take a pay cut after his CBS contract ends. Definitely. Simpson would be a better "fit" with WMMJ, but 102.3 gets great numbers with Joyner in the mornings and I can't see them tampering with that success.....

With WDMV likely now taking its signal from Detroit, the solicitations to contact the main office of Birach Broadcasting to buy brokered hours, and the big red warning on the Birach website stating the illegitimacy of the Virginia-registered version of the company, can one assume there *is* no longer a Virginia-based entity and that Sima Sr. has wrested control of the station from junior and mommy? (1/27/10)

Dave, It appears that CBS Radio (New York) has decided to re-focus WPGC`s target audience to focus on the(CORE LISTENERS) 18-34 set all day and night. How is the station doing with the PPM`S in that target now and do you think that the move will work? I do think that moving Big Tigger to mornings is interesting. I guess Angie Corley and the comedian Mike Brooks will stay since they just signed contracts and join him on his morning show. I know that listening to that half hour this morning killed your ears (SMILE). (1/27/10)

Dave's response: Actually, I like the music Donnie plays during his show. It's more "melodic," pop-oriented urban. Cool stuff. I don't get to see all the PPM demo breakdowns, including the 18-34 daypart numbers.....

[snip] My BULLSHIT METER went off the charts when reading this FCC application for WEMD 1460 in Easton, MD. Do they really think a qualified engineer at the FCC will buy this story? From the Politico: Poll: Fox most trusted name in news www.politico.com (1/27/10)

Dave's response: Not me, baby!

As much as I could object to a lot of what the Sun writes, I think the factor behind stopping the commenting is due to the constant posting of sales announcements for clothing and shoes that appear there. I never have tracked them, but in a lot of the comment queues there are these ads for sneakers, purses, and other stuff. I guess they didn't have a content blocker that was keeping it out. In October, the Long Island newspaper, Newsday, had a web site that had 1.5 to 2 million unique hits. Then they went behind a pay wall. 5$ a week. Now three months later they have 35 subscribers. That's Thirty-Five - - not quite three dozen. People don't like to pay for something they can get free in other places. There might be a lesson for Radio somewhere in there. Personality is the only way for radio to offer something free. Free music is everywhere. www.observer.com... Ed Graham (1/27/10)

Dave's response: Current subscribers to the newspaper, plus subscribers to Long Island's major cable operator, Cablevision, which owns Newsday, get free access to the paper's website without having to pay the $5 a week. Still, just 35 newbies is still pretty pathetic.....

What happens when local newspapers make cutbacks? You get errors like this. In today's edition of The Loudoun Times Mirror the reporter noted that "the most significant of those changes (to the Redskins) was hiring Jim Shanahan as head coach." Errrr, do you mean Mike Shanahan? The Loudoun Times Mirror has cut staff by more than half in the past two years and current employees are forced to take furlogh days. www.loudountimes.com (1/27/10)

A Virginia State Senator and Virginia Delegate have introduced bills to allow cameras to be placed on the Dulles Road to nab backtrackers. The bills, better known as the Lurch Rule, will allow authorities from the airport to catch motorists who are not supposed to be on the restricted roadway. Jason Bishop, aka Lurch from The Junkies, frequently tells WJFK listeners that he stops at a convenience store on airport property so he can use the restricted road. www.loudouni.com (1/27/10)

Dave's response: That's an old trick. Fill-up or buy a cup of coffee at the gas station at Dulles Airport and then "track back" on the non-toll airport lanes. Technically, you're doing "airport business" and allowed to use the restricted lanes.....

Lost in the sports news on Monday was that WVIE, FOX Sports 1370, applied to triple its night time power to 24,000 watts! That's more than 3 times the current 7700 watts night time that doesn't cover all of Baltimore well and adds more than 150,000 people to its night time interference free listening area. WVIE is already a monster 50,000 watts daytime as opposed to CBS Radio's competing ESPN 1300's 5000 watts DAY and NIGHT . If approved by the FCC, this proposal will give FOX Sports 1370 a significantly better signal than ESPN 1300 not only day but now night time as well. There are no complete signal plots in the application, but the FCC app notes potential interference to the AM 1370 in Puerto Rico and specifies using the same signal pattern & no additional construction, so I think this will mean better reception towards not only Baltimore city, but Annapolis, eastern Baltimore county, parts of Harford county, towards Columbia, and possibly pretty good reception on a lot of Maryland's eastern shore. Someone should alert the Mangione people though that the AM 1370 in Pennsylvania is going dark, so they might be able to increase their currently weak daytime signal in northern parts of Baltimore & Harford counties. And lastly, Dave Loudin is incorrect, WAGE's CP for 50kw doesn't expire until Oct. 2011 and their Remain Silent permit doesn't expire until this May, but it appears they've officially cancelled the project themselves due to lack of funds so WAGE 1200 if probably gone for good now as well as the 50kw 1190 proposals for WBIS. The clock now ticks on how long WBIS will be able to keep its FCC license. WBIS a notorious STA offender who's had various unbuilt construction permits going back over 15 years and haven't had an as licensed permanent transmitting facility for at least 10 years! If the FCC had balls, they'd yank both licenses from these loser owners for failure to meet the license requirements and open up the frequencies for bidding. But since the FCC is run by complete idiots, I'm certain that won't happen. (1/27/10)

Dave, the latest “music” on the Big 700 appears to be some kind of Serbian pop, replacing the Spanish stuff last week. Every now and then you hear a barker that says they have a “few good hours” available and gives a Detroit phone number, which translates into we’re looking to broker time. What happened to the rock and country oldies? Bet the BMI police finally caught up with them. Also, since Sima Sr. has stations playing country & rock oldies, Spanish, etc. a good guess is that the music comes via the internet from a server in Detroit – explains the occasional dropouts too. So who’s running the store? Probably a PC somewhere in Fredrick… (1/27/10)

From The Baltimore Sun... "Note: In-story commenting has been temporarily disabled due to technical issues. We are working to correct the issue and will bring back this feature in the future. In the meantime, please use our talk forums to discuss stories." Wanna bet AFTER the 2010 election? HAHA! This decision only appears to effect The Baltimore Sun and The LA Times (unless someone else can find another Tribune paper that has blocked comments). The Chicago Tribune is still allowing comments. Hmmm. By the way, when you register an account at The Baltimore Sun, it's good on all Tribune newspapers. And NO, I'm not that woman from FOX NEWS O'Reilly Factor that's been praising Obama on 38 newspaper sites! LOL (1/27/10)

PLB you are so right!!! I posted on Mailbag without sending any of my millions, which I made by plugging the little hole and keeping the 'trickle' all to myself, and Dave punished me by letting the housing bubble burst!!!! Now I'm nearly destitute and working at Wally world. Worst of all I no longer have the means to buy WHFS and EL Zol for my sinister plans. Thanks for speaking out about the biggest conspiracy since Nixon!!!! Donnie... PS: Thanks for putting things in perspective,I thought I was the most paranoid person on Mailbag. (1/27/10)

Let's cut to the chase. We all know how this going to go down. Paul Bicknell accused John Collings of being critical of Rusty Gibson yesterday. John will shoot back an angry answer. This exchange goes on until John makes a comment the savvy veteran can't come up with a witty response to. That leads to the following post (likely from Paul himself): Dave, I have contributed to your site numerous times, but I may stop doing so. You keep allowing this Paul vs. John battle to continue and the rest of us are sick of it. You have the power to end this. Do so before the rest of us leave the site. Bob Henderson (Real name) DBNR bh/PLB }-( (1/27/10)

Dave's response: Ooooh, Mailbaggers who don't support DCRTV or threaten to withdraw their support - bad things happen to them. They start to look like Andy Parks and they hear 105.9 The Edge in their heads at all time at high volume with no way to shut it off, even when they try to sleep.....

According to an article in the Los Angeles Times: "WorldNetDaily's unique visitors nearly doubled to 2 million a month after Obama took office ... Revenue is on track to hit $10 million annually". Dave, if you would only inject the right amount of hate and bullshit onto your site, you'd soon see bucks and numbers like that! I'm joking of course and it's really sad that assholes like Joseph Farah are on Easy Street, while you have to scrape by, month to month. www.latimes.com (1/27/10)

My BULLSHIT METER went off the charts when reading this FCC application for WEMD 1460 in Easton, MD. Do they really think a qualified engineer at the FCC will buy this story? It's like 2+ years of "The Dog Ate My Homework" story! You can't tell me that after 2 years, they don't know what the problem is and their engineer is still sitting there scratching his head dumbfounded! HAHA! But you know what? I'd make a VEGAS bet the stupid FCC buys this ridiculous story and approves the STA. Who wants to make a bet? Oh, in other FCC news, 2 ABC/Disney owned Radio Disney AM stations went dark in the Norfolk market, AM 1010 and AM 1650. It's unclear why both stations had to go dark from reading the applications, at least to a normal human being like me, but I'm sure the FCC will let ABC/Disney continue to hold the licenses as usual for the purposes of no public good. And you wonder why the public distrusts government and politicians ??? (1/27/10)

RE: Pat Collins and widows. A widow who lost a spouse due to a horrific accident or murder is experiencing the highest stage of grief or shock, especially on the day it happens. Shoving a camera in their face at that time just adds to the horror. (1/27/10)

The Baltimore Sun/Tribune has deleted ALL PUBLIC COMMENTARY on its published stories online. I went through The Sun this morning and could not find a single front page story that allowed comments to be posted (blog comments still have to be approved). It should be noted that comments AGAINST THE BALTIMORE SUN and certain entrenched Maryland politicians up for reelection were becoming more and more prevalent, not to mention several Sun writers were banning people from commenting on their stories as well, like David Zarawik, The Sun's media ethics critic! (1/27/10)

How stupid is the Citadel corporate decision to replay a 12 hour old Joe Scarborough show every weeknight on WMAL? What do they owe this guy other than a pat on the ass and a thank you? Instead they end up pre-empting the first hour one of the most intelligent talk shows in America from John Batchelor, to replay the first hour of a stale morning show that esentially rehashes the same crap you see on "Morning Joe" on cable. Tonight we hear MSNBC's Dylan Ratigan sitting in for Joe & Mika identifying the hour by actual time (i.e.: 10:25 AM instead of "25 minutes past the hour") and as airing on 77 WABC, even though the show is syndicated! Anybody paying attention? It smacks of the same small market corporate decision mindset that puts the Trucking Show on instead of the full 5 hours of Coast-to-Coast overnight. Citadel has no business operating any radio station higher than market #50. You'd think that with Scott Shannon the VP of Programming they'd also get a morning show on The Edge before it goes away for another placeholder format or the eventual simulcast of WMAL on an FM signal. (RE: Pat Collins of News 4 should be ashamed of himself. How dare he stick a mic and camera in the face of a grieving widow???) Im not sure how much you know about journalism but a "good journalist" would not make the decision for the widow like you want to. He would give her the ability to make that decision and share her story. (1/27/10)

Couple of items from the FCC: WAGE's application to change frequency to 1190 has expired, so it is now dismissed. WVIE 1370 has applied to raise it's nighttime power from 7 kW to 24 kW with the same directional power. The only wrinkle is additional interference to a station in Puerto Rico, but WVIE's application shows the effected area is either over water or over unpopulated areas. The channel 9 temporary power hike request was approved just before Christmas, so they are already operating at that level. Regards, Dave Loudin (1/27/10)

To the person who mentioned how disliked the Scott & Anita show was or more importantly, I assume he meant Anita Marks...... Ummm, being liked is not the same thing as getting ratings. Anita created controversy, provoked callers, and got ratings. Quite a few people have listened to Rush Limbaugh & Howard Stern who didn't like them just to hear what bizarre things were going to come out of their mouths. Garceau will be much more boring without Anita, I was bored on Day 1 already and turned MASN off. As for CBS not wanting her to do side gigs, that excuse is BS too as Garceau has a bunch of other gigs still. And the fact that Garceau was pimping the Brandon Marshall idea was like salt in the wound after Garceau ridiculed Anita Marks for weeks over her fascination with the Ravens getting the wide receiver and rallied the other CBS people on the show to treat her similarly. When Garceau first joined the show, you could tell he was determined to make it Garceau's Court by rallying other people on the show into becoming his lapdogs. I used to like Scott Garceau on WMAR 2, but the Scott & Anita show showed another ugly side of him that I don't like. By the way, I often watched the show on MASN. You can tell a lot about people by watching their facial expressions when they say things that you can't determine on the radio. If nothing else, you can say Anita Marks went out with class and Scott Garceau showed NO CLASS on his first show without her. (1/27/10)

A poster writes: " what kind of journalist even approaches a widow..." regarding the recent deaths of 2 Metro workers on the tracks last night. Hopefully, EVERY kind of journalist. Thats the JOB of a journalist to approach family, interview officials, photograph the scene, etc as they COVER THE STORY. What makes this any different than the other death stories where reporters show up knocking on doors of the family? It happens every day, with every death-related story on the news. If it's newsworthy, then the family can choose to be part of the process, or not. Again, don't kill the messenger. Sometimes the family members can add a vital piece of information to the story. Or not. But its the reporters job to approach the family members, some of whom WANT to talk, others, understandably, despise the press. How about taking a closer look at METRO for once; how many people, passengers & workers alike, have to DIE before steps are taken to avoid more fatalities? (1/27/10)

(regarding a previous post) "I doubt that Doc the sunslinger is related, since Holliday isn't Johnny's last name. Dave's response: John Bobbitt....." Yes - but his ACTUAL FULL LEGAL NAME is John Holliday Bobbitt and, as I mentioned, he and Doc Holliday were originally from Georgia. My question stems from the common name "Holliday" and from the fact that both came from the state of Georgia. It is possible that "Holliday" is a family name from somewhere in Johnny's lineage, so I asked about a possible connection here, in the hope that someone would know. (1/27/10)

Let's just hope Grandy & Andy, and Chris Plante devote as many phone calls to this news piece www.cbsnews.com as they did to the so called "Gorilla Journalism" these now arrested clowns did on Acorn last year. RE: Pat Collins and the response"in my opinion, she was very cooperative and open to the interview...I didn't get the impression that he was intruding on her. He said that the family of the other Metro worker killed in last night's accident didn't want to be interviewed, and to his credit, he didn't pursue it." That's all true, BUT what kind of journalist even approaches a widow in that situation? It's very insensitive and the lowest form of sensationalism. (1/26/10)

Nope. Barely moved. Keep up the good work! (1/26/10)

WUSA had some crazy characters in the 7pm newscast tonight. I counted a half dozen chyron mistakes in the first ten minutes. One set of letters said "Metro Workers Killed" at the bottom of the screen, but that dropped out and was replaced by a "NOT AGAIN" that flashed midway up the screen for a few seconds. Next, Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) was instead identified by the characters as "Devanne, Trucker." I guess station management now has McGinty operating the font generator with his foot. (1/26/10)

I am not a fan of Channel 4's Pat Collins...his delivery is far too dramatic and sensationalized...but, I watched his interview with the Metro worker's widow on tonight's broadcast, and in my opinion, she was very cooperative and open to the interview...I didn't get the impression that he was intruding on her. He said that the family of the other Metro worker killed in last night's accident didn't want to be interviewed, and to his credit, he didn't pursue it. -- Bobbie (1/26/10)

Pat Collins of News 4 should be ashamed of himself. How dare he stick a mic and camera in the face of a grieving widow??? On tonight's 6 p.m. cast, he showed a clip of the widow of one of the Metro workers who were killed overnight. How tasteless, inhumane and thoughtless can you get? (1/26/10)

Re:"Dave, I am surprised at your silence on the demise of your beloved EROCKSTER on DC101 HD2..." I miss EROCKSTER over-the-air (is that term out of date?). While webcasts are available, it's real nice to listen in the car, in the shop, etc where there is no pc. The new feed on the HD2 channel seems to play a lot of the same "angry yelling guys" format music that is on the main channel. At least the new feed has a jock - it's nice to hear a human voice. Robert, Arlington (1/26/10)

Dave's response: My HD Radio is in my home office, not in the car, where I've pretty much given up listening to DC area music radio stations since so many of 'em are so unlistenably hideous. It's pretty much talk - 88.5, 103.5, 630, 106.7, 94.3, 88.1, 1090 - when I'm in the vehicle.....

I'm very sorry to hear of Ken Matz's passing. A quick personal story about his time here in Baltimore. About 23 years ago, I had an oral history assignment on television news. We had to interview at least one person working in the field we were assigned. I started calling around to the local stations to see if anyone would talk to me, figuring I would get a behind the scenes person, but shooting big and asking for anchors as well. WJZ never returned numerous calls. I'll never forget the response from WBAL, "Sorry, we're not a library." When I called WMAR and explained my assignment, I was put on hold. The next voice on the phone was none other than Ken Matz. After explaining what my assignment was, he not only agreed to meet me at the station for an interview, he also told me that he would set up a second interview with his producer. I arrived at the station between the 6:00 news and the 11:00 news. Mr. Matz greeted me and introduced me to his executive producer for my first interview. Then Mr. Matz sat down with me for an extensive interview. I figured those two interviews were it and was amazed that I had spent as much time there as I had, but after the interview Mr. Matz asked if I would like a tour. He took me and my family through the whole operation, studio, newsroom, etc. and explained how everything worked. It was an unforgettable experience and is the reason that whenever I happen to tune into the local news after work, I still tune to WMAR. They've been at the bottom of the heap for some time, but something they did off the air that was unlikely to make even a blip in their ratings has kept me watching for many years. (1/26/10)

Dave, I am surprised at your silence on the demise of your beloved EROCKSTER on DC101 HD2. Its been off the airwaves in DC for over a week! (1/26/10)

Dave's response: Honestly, I don't listen all that much to HD Radio. I can get erockster, plus a lot of other cool sounding stations like BBC Radio 6, Philly's WXPN, Chicago's WXRT, and LA's KXLU on the web.....

re:"Bob Dylan Joins WETA's WH Music Special" I hope Bobby Z can stay clean and sober for his performance. I can remember he was high as a kite for his appearance on the Late Night with David Letterman 10th-year anniversary show. (1/26/10)

When tuning into MASN today at 3:00pm on my Cox (not Shaun) cable system, I found it rather interesting that the graphic at the bottom of the screen now reads "The Scott Garceau Show." Interesting perusing the reader comments on the Anita Marks exit after the David Zurawik piece in "The Sun". Seems ol' David had no idea how much disliked she and the program were. I thought that was pretty much widely known. Shows how out of touch he is with the market. (1/26/10)

Grandy and Andy in the Morning (Hi, Nehman!) were talking calls on President Nino's interview with Diane Sawyer where he seemed to be laying the groundwork for bailing on a second term, but really you could interpret it either way. Apart from the high percentage of callers going by the name "Steve" they did take calls from liberals, both those who brought the crazy and those who brought the thoughtful. More disturbing was yesterday's article in the Post about how The Man spends his time up in the Carter. Surfing the net to check sports news, watching ESPN, reading Sports Illustrated and Rolling Stone (and, to be fair, The Economist). The article was intended to show how plugged in he is, but it came off like he's goofing off a lot. Really, he's Peter Principled himself into a job he's just not up to. I've never been a critic of presidential vacations and I'm not going to start now, but dude, you have people on staff to read magazines for you, and if you were my employee (oh, wait a minute, you are, and I'll be writing your evaluation in a few years) I would sit you down and explain that you need to be all about the bidness when you're on the jizzob. Less time reading magazines, less time reading those imaginary letters in the residence. Less time surfing the internet. Plenty of time for that after your second term. Thanks for the link to the Captain 20 page! I think I was on there a while back and the video refuse to comply with me. As far as Scott and Anita, perhaps it will be difficult for the show to continue under one person, but it is more likely to do so under Scott Garceau. He has more experience in the market than Anita did. When he joined the show, you could tell by Anita's change in seating and by the show name (Not, the Anita and Scott Show) who was more important. Anita will be a loss, but not as big as others predict. Sincerely, James (1/26/10)

Just to make things clear, Anita Marks wasn't run out of her job. CBS wanted to pay her to be their afternoon co-host, she wanted them to pay her to run around the country looking for national gigs. They agreed to disagree. The sad truth is that regardless of what a lot of us may have thought about her talent and knowledge, her show was always beating the sports competition in the PM, even when it was on 1300AM. Scott and Zinno did mention her departure in the 5PM hour; although it took the prodding of a caller to get them to do it. Howie (1/26/10)

It was clear they didn't get along. Garceau was Leno to Anita's Conan in my opinion. The show will be boring without her, at least she created controversy that provoked callers. Garceau on the other hand is like the policy wonks of sports show hosts. I would bet MONEY that Anita Marks could kick his ass on the bball court, the football field, and the soccer field, probably any sport! Garceau has never played ANYTHING! He's like a stuck up on himself elderly sports DORK! And he deliberately RAN ANITA MARKS OFF OF 105.7 THE FAN on purpose. #1: He didn't even have the guts to mention her after she was gone. #2: SCOTT GARCEAU QUOTE from yesterday: "The Ravens could use a receiver like Brandon Marshall"!!!!! Now keep in mind arrogant weasel Garceau ridiculed Anita Marks for WEEKS and WEEKS for suggesting The Ravens try to get Brandon Marshall. Now, all of a sudden, Anita Marks is pushed out the door and the illustrious arrogant snobby over-paid, non-sports jock SCOTT GARCEAU has the sleazy nerve to say "The Ravens could use a receiver like Brandon Marshall" ???? Hello - appreciate your coverage. I was surprised to read that Anita Marks' show is popular. As a Chicago transplant, I thought her show was just awful. Sorry to hear about Ken Matz but his death does make me ask whatever happen to channel 2's Tobie Marsh? Also with that being said whatever became of Ken Phillips, Rudy Miller, Tom Sweeney (?) and Bob Bolton ( WFBR )? I know that Rudy had since retired from TV but what is she doing now? I still have on tape from 1988 when Rudy Miller had to give a "breaking news" story on the old "News 11"...the death of porn actor John Holmes. Ah the look on her face doing THAT story...PRICELESS !!!! (1/25/10)

The stupidity of NBC never ends. They've gone out of their way to tell everyone on earth that their 10-11 and 11:30 programming is a failure...and now they're going to show reruns of those shows for a month? If I were running an affiliate, I'd be abandoning ship ASAP. (1/25/10)

A Post managing editor, during an online chat going on as I write this, has just said that Lisa de Moraes will (FINALLY--ed.) start covering local TV: "McLean, Va.: With the Post's closing its domestic bureaus, including the one in Los Angeles, will you be able to continue covering television and movie entertainment news as closely as you have in the past? The NBC/Leno/O'Brien saga has America enthralled, and it would be a shame for The Post to have to rely on reprinting second-hand wire-service reports rather than getting the latest from the horse's... er, mouth." - "Raju Narisetti: In Lisa de Moraes we have one of the finest tv and entertainment news reporters/columnists. She will continue to cover the industry as closely as she did before and now throw in some strong coverage of the local DC tv scene as well. So no worries on that front. We have, in any given week, between 3-5 reporters/critics/columnists who are focused on the tv industry so you will continue to see robust coverage in the Post that will be supplemented by AP/Reuters and other relevant sources when it makes sense." www.washingtonpost.com... I understand DS did have a 2 year contract, but I think that things are being maneuvered and altered to get him out of it and save face. CBS is worried he may talk so much he makes them look bad, and of course folks will believe him over management. He IS Donnie and an icon, right? (1/25/10)

Re: Citadel... Have you ever paid attention to Citadel's presence in Atlanta? (WYAY)... They put local boys (Randy and Spiff) on in the morning and they appear to have a great following. They've got a local guy doing the afternoon drive time. Both of those have local traffic and weather. The rest of the 24 hours have Scott Shannon playing oldies. I grab it off the internet here in Alexandria. When they have church on Sunday morning I switch over to Citadel's station in Connecticut, where it's always Scott Shannon. (WREF) The Atlanta format would be a great model for WMAL. -= Jim =- (1/25/10)

Does anyone know what is on tonight at 10 PM (9 Central and Mountain) on NBC? I looked at the "Official NBC Website" and Jay Leno is on at 10, and The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brian is on at 11:35, both "New" according to NBC. I even checked WNBC, KNBC, WCAU, and WRC and they list it the same way. Does anyone at NBC know what's on tonight from 10 - 12:37 (other than "Your Local News")? Also, putting music standards on 1050 AM sounds like a great idea to me. And I still notice that WHAG on Verizon FiOS has better Surround Sound separation than WRC does. The only problem with it is that sometimes Ch 25 seems to have a half-second sound dropout at random times. But the applause for Conan Friday night in 5.1 Surround on Ch 25 was incredibly miked! -- Carl in Olney (1/25/10)

Dave's response: I believe that Leno will continue in the 10 PM slot, with Conan reruns at 11:35, until the Olympics in February. Then, Leno moves to 11:35 on March 1st.....

I see that the lineup page at 105.7's webpage hasn't been updated yet, but the show's page now reads "The Scott Garceau Show". I'm glad to see Anita go, but can Scott pull the four hours by himself? We'll see... Just for the record, Janeane Garofalo hasn't worked at AirAmerica in 3 or 4 years. AA always went for "name" hosts and, with the exception of Franken, all were failures. Montel Williams was the worst, Jerry Springer a close second. Meanwhile, they ignored the unknowns they had who actually had a grasp of policy issues and never gave those people the chance to develop their programs. Maddow was moved from timeslot to timeslot and format to format before she left for MSNBC. No matter who was running things, they just never had a clue. Of course, trying to sell a network in this day and age was doomed even if AA had managed to hire God himself for drive time. Howie (1/25/10)

Dave: 1) Chris Plante is a self-described Libertarian, not a Conservative. Many in his core fan base has been at odds with him on various issues (yes, we're all not 'psychotic stalkers') and I myself have not agreed with him at times and have even turned blue-in-the-face trying to argue my point. 2) Both Plante's show and G&A have phone lines open in order to invite and encourage everyone to call -- primarily Liberals. Just a few days ago someone on the DCRTV Mailbag was complaning the G&A didn't allow much time for calls -- well voilá -- now you have it! G&A dedicate three hours (from 5-8am, the height of 'rush hour') to news, comments & calls. So then, as rush hour starts winding down from 8-9am, why not have an all-calls format? I think it's refreshing... -Silvie- (1/25/10)

Re; WMAL mornings. One problem, aside from content, is their timing. I'll tune in from top of the hour until 20 after. After that, it's not until 40 after (20 minutes later) that they do anything worthwhile (all commercials and their worthless traffic). I'll tune out, and may not tune back in. Also megadittos about the trucker show. Either give that up and run all of Coast to Coast or give Coast to Coast up so another station can run it in it's entirety. (1/25/10)

I'm so angry! Where's my SAG award?!?! -BLP :-[ (1/25/10)

Also loved today's Rant. Someone (unsigned) wrote, "...The problem with doing an 'all caller' hour is - if the callers suck - so do you. It is akin to a music station playing all requests. If all the callers request 'Mambo #9' - you're screwed." This morning at 4:54, my alarm went off and WLIF was playing Mambo #5. It will stick in my head till Friday. It wasn't a request, they play it just to get even. About WMAL's call-in hour. They should remember that callers are not the audience. The talk audience is listening to you to be entertained. Callers should be used to entertain the listener( much like Leno's Jaywalking), not to reinforce the host's views. If Citadel can't program stations, and doesn't know how to entertain the audience, then they should sell. Radio sucks because the people who run the stations don't know how to do it. Good radio on WMAL really wouldn't cost more than bad radio. You just have to do it right with the same amount of people and budget. One guy with a news man could do a better show than they have on now. I was stunned to find out that Leno had 275 staffers who helped him broadcast a loser of a program at 10pm, and Conan had 200 staff members to broadcast his failure on the Tonight Show. Ed Graham (1/25/10)

Your rant re: Citadel is spot on. The problem with doing an 'all caller' hour is - if the callers suck - so do you. It is akin to a music station playing all requests. If all the callers request 'Mambo #9' - you're screwed. WMAL is grasping at straws right now. They must have convinced themselves that this new G&A format will move the PPM needle. I'd love to hear the logic argument on that one. (1/25/10)

Call me a wacky bastid, but regarding WZAA: what about a return to Full Service AM? You remember -- news, sports, weather, music, talented announcers etc? Kinda like WMAL, except less crazy stuff and a few records per hour. Have we reached a point in fragmentation and super-serving slivers of an audience that it is no longer viable? (1/25/10)

Dave's response: To answer your question - yes. Plus, few people listen to AM anymore in the DC market, mainly the elderly and infirmed, and 1050's night signal ain't so hot.....

Was AM 570 off the air this morning, or is my radio just ignoring the crap they spew? I tried to listen to the big hour this morning, but found C-SPAN radio more entertaining. (1/25/10)

Dave's response: Just checked and 570 is indeed airing the sounds of silence.....

Dave, I read todays rant and had to LOL about the overnight "trucking show" on WMAL. It might work on 1500 WFED since that signal goes down I-95 but on WMAL? It might as well be on WOL which barely covers the District at night. Most truckers probably listen to the Truckers Channel on Sirius/XM anyway. I am reading an interesting book written by Larry Matthews called "I Used to Be in Radio." He tells stories of some of the colorful characters in area radio well before I arrived in the area. I just saw a show that left me speechless. I thought Ravens Extra,on MASN, was unwatchable, but with a new year comes a new show. Sports Plus on channel 9. Dave, the new guy, and Sara, the kind of anchor that has been there awhile, have the chemistry of a wet dish towel. Do they know they are at the CBS in Washington D.C? I know its channel 9 and aren't what they used to be, but damn. Then the BH, made a cameo with something called the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Straight to the ugly. This was a re-hash of highlights for yukks. Not a good look for Mr."Best Sports Anchor." With the recent memorial service for George Michael still fresh in my mind, I thought about the void he left in this market. Sports Plus was a minus in my view. Love the site,TVSPORTSDC. (1/25/10)

Though I don't think Brett Haber is doing a bad job at the anchor desk (in fact, it's a refreshing change since I can't stand listening to Surae Chinn, the normal weekend substitute), it says something about the lack of talent at WUSA when the sports director is called upon to be a fill-in anchor. ("This is a predator capitalist military country populated by an angry religious, military class (600 billion a year buys generations of retired/pensioner military voters). The key is to unlock this packaged military vote and set 'em against the capitalist corporates and bankers.") Ladies, this is just the greatest line a predator like Clarke Kissinger or Mark Andersen might have fed you during Revolution Summer. This is a brilliant strategy to harvest acres and acres of college-age pelt. Think about that the next time you set out for an anti-globalization/whatever rally. You're just pelt, and every guy there has you on his "movement" agenda. Little Grunt Pack and Normals in Baltimore is in on the same game, an endless stream of college-age pelt. Even tho' the weather forecast for the day changed radically very early in the day, WTOP "radio" had an obviously pre-recorded forecast in the late afternoon calling for 2 or 3 inches of rain. I would call this half-assed to say the least. I guess those WJLA guys need their time off. Reminds me somewhat of Dave Johnson's pre-recorded sports reports when he was on the road and there was no one to do the live sports. It always sounded like it was live and Bruce Alan or somebody else would "thank" him and then say something like " Oh by the way Joe Doakes was fired as manager of the Tripe today " Regards Biff (1/24/10)

It's clear from his defense of WaPO in Sunday's paper that Dana Milbank knows who pays him. But the piece sure seems thinned-skin and did not address any of the blunders WaPo has had within the past year - does sponsored "Salons" ring a bell? Frankly, I'm surprised that WaPo ran a rebuttal to The New Republic article at all. TNR has a small circulation, though likely concentrated in DC & NYC, and left-leaning editorial. It seems to me that WaPo and TNR are usually comrades-in-arms. I can only imagine how apoplectic Milbank and the Post would have been if the critical article had been in The Nation. (1/24/10)

Seen on WBAL-TV website: Republicans Head To Waikiki To Discuss Strategy. Riiight....because the less than prosperous don't need to get a whiff of the next Trickle Down gimmick to be used on us.I guess people really are as stupid as they need us to be! After 8 years of being jerked around and losing rights, benefits and quality of life everyone is ready to throw it all back to those who caused most of it!!!!! How long did this take? Barely a year!!! Doesn't anyone see more than the media giants feed us? Democrats are in danger of losing power again because they did not fix what GOP fatcats fucked up since the 80s yet no one is doing more than whining about huge bonuses given to executives of companies responsible for larceny and the collapse of our financial structure. Would you like to go to Hawaii? Doesn't matter because you're going to pay for THEM to go leaving YOU sitting in your soon to be auctioned homes. It took more than a year for the current fiasco to develop yet the crowd mentality is now "Republicans are coming to the rescue" despite the fact they did most of this. Would you pat an arsonist on the back for saving half your house just because he showed up with the firefighters? Lets all go buy an anchor and get in line to hand the rope to our "Saviors". It should be over pretty quick since we're all weary from treading water. The water they're bailing out of thier yachts is being dumped over our heads and we pretend its a nice shower?!?!? WETA is broadcasting classical music on HD-2 this morning. No identification of the music being played, no announcers, sounds like they just are streaming some service or other. A real shame if this is all they plan to do with the HD-2 channel. Given the very limited offerings of the main station, the HD-2 offers a real opportunity to serve up some 20th century music, compositions by American composers, and other works WETA disdains. Folks I have nothing to do with this format other than thinking Bonneville might give it a try with the departure of AA. There is certainly nothing like it currently and that includes SATRAD. A new syndicated Adult Pop-Jazz format called "TIMELESS COOL" is set to launch nationally on JANUARY 25th. "Dear Pen: you have nothing better to do with your time than write something negative about a fund-raiser for the most unfortunate people in the world?" - You've made my point for me. I would have had something better to do if even a single one of my shows was on the air. Instead it was bad talent show, all channels, all the time. Thanks for getting my name right, though. To the other poster who got my name right, my point was that Anderson Cooper didn't realize that his victim didn't speak English, which is why he didn't speak at all when Cooper was trying to hustle him into the panel van. Cooper was puzzled by this. Dude, you're in a foreign country -- they don't all parlay the anglay. Petting to a point, and straining at stool... --- ThePenIsMightier (1/23/10)

Yeah ThePenis! Why bag on a telethon on this forum when the "in" thing to do is bag on Don Geronimo!!! BLP :0[ (1/23/10)

Dear Dave- I recently moved back to the area and was pleased to notice a buzz around town regarding the Caps. I have to say that I've heard quite a bit of coverage on The Fan. In particular their afternoon show with Lavar Arrington and later with Holden. Unfortunately, 980 continues to give me Redskins coverage non-stop. I used to be in radio and understand that 'Skins coverage is the bread and butter, but enough's enough. We have 1 good team in town. Other shows should start taking notice of the only winners in town! Mason-Falls Church (1/23/10)

Want fun radio on 1050 AM or somewhere else? Bring back Allan Prell's "Dateline Show" along with the "Yard Sale" and Pat Banks and Guy Hamilton and Steve Stefany and others. Change the calls to WEEL. Now that would be fun to hear. Other than WTOP, I think no other station is worth hearing. Talk is boring; sports isn't really sports as the hosts either don't know anything about sports (Czabe?) or can even speak clearly (LaVar? BMitch? Dave Johnson?). WEEL. WEEL. WEEL. (1/23/10)

Dave's response: How about WMOM on 1050? Mike O'Meara's one-hour daily podcast replayed 24/7. Sounds dumb, but I bet it would get some PPM numbers for that dippy little station at almost no cost.....

Pen, on the telethon, if a Haitian child isn't speaking French, chances are it's Creole... (1/23/10)

Reading the news about the Caps ratings, I have to wonder how the ratings account for large numbers of people watching in bars and similar establishments? If a bar has 20 people watching the game, does that just count for one household? (1/23/10)

Mike in Fairfax: Someone should tell Brian Mitchell that Caps fans have long written off 980, which is why no one called him (not to mention that his show on 980 wasn't all that highly rated to begin with). People like Pollin have so poisoned the well over the years by dissing the sport and the team, that long time Caps fans just don't listen to that station any more. And Mike Wise's recent comments suggest that WJFK will be no different. Look, I think the local stations are crazy not to feed the Caps (and Nats (as that is a team on the way up) growing fan base and people like Pollin and Wise are living in 1988. They don't recognize that the DC sports market has and is changing. They will be the losers in the long run. But the fact is that the Caps themselves do a great job of providing Caps coverage, talk shows, interviews, etc. on their website. Not to mention all the team's bloggers out there, which have become as much a part of local hockey coverage as the radio stations, television networks and mainstream newspapers. And I think WFED does a pretty good job of covering the team too. That's not an excuse for the attitudes of the losers like Pollin and Wise and their idiot program directors (and they will all jump on the bandwagon during the playoffs, watch and see) . But there is good Caps coverage out there if you seek it.......... (1/23/10)

("I remember when Bennett Zier headed Clear Channel DC, frequently the company would have none or maybe just one of its five FMers in the top ten, ratings-wise. With Bennett long gone from 1801 Rockville Pike, often all of CC's five DC FMers are now in the top ten.") Now that's just not a fair comment Dave. The entire ratings system has changed and has much to do with that. Meanwhile many of Zeir's stations soared during his run there... DC101 with Eliot, WASH with Christmas music, HOT blowing Z104 out of the format and settling in, TEM a major performer in a very low level AM listening market, WMZQ as a steady performer with huge revenue (revenue-wise Zier's stations soared all years). It was the log jam of urban stations that sat at the top for years from the diary system that PPM broke up and let more of the general market stations rise - except for the CBS stations. (Oops for them. PGC fell and no others rose to counterbalance the rev drop). Anyway, don't pile on the "meanness wagon" that has become the Mailbag Dave. We hope we can respect you more than that. If your goal is to have me not contribute to your cause, the quickest way to achieve that is to preempt every single tv show I would normally watch. Is there some reason that all the networks are carrying this thing? Okay, Chris Rock just wheeled out Muhammad Ali. And now some lady is butchering "Let It Be" abetted by the Roots. Anderson Cooper, apparently trying to groom some 8 year-old in a red X-Men t-shirt, doesn't seem to realize that Haitian kids speak French, not English. What this situation needs is fewer singers I don't recognize, and more Bill Gates opening his financial floodgates and the sweet release of Dick Cheney and Halliburton. Would it kill you to use some rebar? This telethon just sucks. --- ThePenIsMightier (1/23/10)

The Post is reporting about the close relationship between Paul Harvey and J. Edgar Hoover. This isn’t really "news" - and neither is the fact that he was anti-Communist. The article also mentions a 1951 incident when Harvey gained entry to the Argonne National Laboratory, as part of a story to expose lax security at the site. This is definitely old news. I remember reading about it in Esquire magazine, in 1978. www.washingtonpost.com (1/23/10)
