And to me he kind of gives insight into why CBS Radio holds onto the Urban leaning remixed format that they are currently running. He says that the station is consistently Top 3 18-34 and Top 5 18-49 two key young demos. (2/4/12) The incessant technical foul-ups on WNEW are starting to get annoying. As many have pointed out, it's not the screw up that matters it's how the talent handles it. Their reaction time is not very good. When you go to a source and it isn't there - move on quickly. to have 30 seconds of dead air is inexcusable. Ever. In an attempt to maintain a level of stoic news credibility i guess they choose to ignore their mistakes rather than embrace them. Just once, I'd love to hear one of their anchors mention "ghosts in the machine" or "working the kinks" out. Listeners understand and it makes you sound more human. Simply ignoring the constant gaffes makes it seem like, as some have pointed out, bad college radio. This is a top 10 market, kids, and the people in charge of this runaway freight train have decades of radio experience. Unfortunately, any kind of human reaction is not available in the CBS "How-to-run-a-news-station" handbook. That's too bad. As they continue to sound like the gang who couldn't shoot straight, WTOP keeps chugging along on all 8 cylinders. Yes, the race is early but the way WNEW has stumbled out of the starting blocks is surprising. It shows a real lack of preparation and awareness. (2/4/12) Just so you all know, it's yellow: www.jmarcoz.com... Now leave poor Joyce alone. (2/4/12) Hi Dave, I've been producing a half-hour interview show that's been airing on WBAL for the last year. Here's a sample: www.paulchristomd.com... I'm thinking it would fit nicely on WMAL. Got a minute to give me your opinion? Thanks, Ty (2/4/12) Dave's response: Sexual pain in women? Fascinating stuff. Yeah, I think it would be a fit for WMAL. I could make a Mary Katharine Ham joke, but I won't..... Have noticed that a number of times when Tucker Barnes begins his weathercast, his voice is warbled which I'm assuming is related to some issue with his microphone. And then the other day, Gwen Tolbert was filling in and I heard the same warbling. Do the behind the scenes peoplenot hear what I hear? (2/4/12) I open a surprise package from a DCRTV fan with memories of Kirk, Mark, and Lopez on 98 Rock, a WOL/WKYS/WMMJ Stone Soul Picnic t-shirt, another t-shirt from WPER on its fifth anniversary, the book "On The Radio" from WMAL legends Harden and Weaver, some Oprah memories, and much more. Plus, Big Tigger to NBC4? And, it was 40 years ago this month that my parents moved the family to the DC area. All in today's "Dave TV"..... (2/4/12) I think that WNEW is doing OK. I waited at least a week to listen. I hate Bob Marburg on TOP. This week in thepeak of DC Rush Hour, he told us about a crash on I-81. That is 60 miles out of DC. Trying to get a feel for NEW’s traffic. Tonight the mentioned a I-95 crash in Baltimore. Normally, that would piss me off but it is a Friday and DCers do travel 95. JFK’s traffic continues to get better with driving times included. I think traffic on the ones for NEW is a bad idea. Especially at the top of the hour and at thirty minutes. Anyone who just heard traffic on TOP is not switching. Most newsnicks are waiting for the national news then on TOP. Sports talkers are in commercial. Got to the 4 or 5’s opposite TOP. Come in after that with hook them news. Next thing you know it is past traffic at TOP and they are yours. And weather every 4-5 minutes???? Where are the tornados? WTF? TEM and JFK did ok jobs of SB coverage. Still don’t get why Czabe and Kevin did not go. Andy’s interview of Da'Rel Scott was terrible. They sounded like they were at a SB party. And, his negativity towards UMD’s new football coach was biased. Even Czabe pointed it out. Thom had a few good nights in Indy. Lots of lung butter this week. Last month TEM went dead at 515. This week it was 545. Mr. Tony’s cavalcade of Super Bowl prediction was great today. Friday’s with Feinstein on the Junks is always great radio. He should have his own show. Gary Williams is great on TEM. Another guy that could kill on radio. I would love to see the bandwidth just shrink on the stream when JTII and Mike Wise come on. I am sure I am one of thousands who switch immediately. BOAD killed this week. Especially, the Reloaded show. MOS’s Bonus show was one of the best. What Robb Spewak started with this week was gold Jerry, just gold. Oh, yeah, CBS has the worst radio websites. Just cj=heck NYC and DC. How embarrassing. OOBBEE (2/4/12) Dave, to clarify re KNX 1070/LA's carriage of the CBS Evening News: the station carries only the first five or ten minutes, M-F. This is obviously a promo for the entire show airing later on sister CBS2 and includes a pre-recorded handoff from Scott Pelley (same as Couric before him) returning control to the KNX anchors. It should also be noted that KNX is known to use story packages from CBS News and CBS2 outside of the (partial) Evening News simulcast. Additionally, KNX simulcasts the audio of 60 Minutes on Sunday evenings, as at least some other CBS affiliates (just O&Os? not sure) are known to do. (2/4/12) "Quelle surprise! ZombieWoof got something wrong. While there are many Jennilee Harrisons in the world, the actress who appeared on "Three's Company" is Jenilee (one "n") Harrison. So, there is now a controversy about what woman's picture promotes ZW's tissue use. Who's the poseur now?" You are. You fell into my trap, criticizing a minor spelling error, when the main prize was staring you in your face. Jenile Harissonn was in Playboy but that was after it went bad (June 1987), and it was Priscilla Barnes who was in Penthouse (March 1976) during the golden age of ladies' old-timey handwarmers. Speaking of which, your mom needs a new loofah and a rest. Be a lamb and get me a beer and some smokes while you're up, won't you? - ZombieWoof (2/4/12) /\ February 4 Messages /\ ![]() \/ February 3 Messages \/ Someone mentioned that KNX 1070 AM in LA simulcasts the Eastern time CBS Evening News. I believe that WCBS 880 Simultcasts the Evening News also. CORY HABER, NBC ENGINEER(RETIRED), WASHINGTON,D.C. (2/3/12) ("Blaming the anchor for dead air or misplaced commercials is misplacing the blame. Blame them for not being able to recover from software bugs and quirks and stumble horribly until the next commercial break, which has happened just about daily to Nancy and Jenny.") You are correct. When I got home at 3 am, I thought the same thing. The sports lady coming on, missed traffic and weather, it all sounded bad, stuff happens. Although I would say it's happen way too much in the first few weeks. The anchor fumbling because of it is inexcusable. And you can't had like 30 seconds of dead air, then a commercial. The station going off-air for 60, 90 secs, even 3 minute chunks multiple times between 12 and 3 am is a criticism of the engineers. Duct tape work. Maybe WNEW thinks news doesn't matter between 12am and 5am. Although if that's true, why pay someone and do news content. Might as well save a buck and play canned programming. If it does matter, I wonder if CBS has engineers that are even reachable overnight. It'd be nice to hear from Robert Sanchez on why listeners are hearing all these technical malfunctions. (2/3/12) Although not local news, this dovetails with some recurring threads here on the board… specifically the periodic games of “chicken” the cable people and broadcast TV have, and CATV rates/channel choice. Down in Corpus Christi, TX, the NBC affiliate, KRIS-TV, is no longer on the Time-Warner Cable systems in the region. This is due to expiration of the re-transmission agreement, and the refusal of both parties to reach a settlement. Where this becomes interesting is the Super Bowl™ on Sunday. Combine this with the traditional power of the Texas congressional delegation, and an election year, and you have the potential of a “perfect storm” for the FCC (and perhaps Congress) to find a “solution”. My prediction is that the “solution” will come from the FCC and will be one nobody will like. My guess is that the solution will be an “a la carte” channel selection of some sort being imposed on the CATV industry, combined with CATV’s being allowed to execute a re-transmission agreement with an out-of-market station of the same network should the re-transmission agreement expire, and carry that signal until an agreement is reached with the local affiliate. Of course, whether an agreement could be reached with an out-of-market station could be interesting –Not counting the potential technical hurdles for carriage! One would hope that cooler heads at both NCTA and NAB (and within the respective industries) would prevail upon both TWC and KRIS-TV to stop this childish greed. However, neither trade association is what it once was. So, I don’t see anything but trouble happening on this. Imagine the result if the Dallas Cowboys or Houston Texans had made it to the Super Bowl™! -Unsigned Corporate Suit (2/3/12) Had the Mike Wise show on in my car & as soon as I got to work, they started talking to Jim Vance & Joe Gibbs. Could only listen to a few minutes before I had to go into my building. And from what I heard, sorry I didn't hear the entire conversation. Good stories. (2/3/12) I cannot believe a great radio station as CBS owned, KNX Radio in Los Angeles, carries CBS Evening News from TV. And that's at 3:30 p.m. Pacific time. This is a great news radio station. Putting TV on radio cheats listeners because TV news relies so much on video (and maybe some photographs). I sure hope 99.1 FM in the DC area doesn't start doing this. Radio is radio and listeners don't want to hear someone say, "Look at this... ..." To follow-up my KNX Radio rant, the station aired the first 10 minutes of the CBS Evening (TV) News. I still say it shouldn't be done. Listeners cannot see the video and even if they could, and they're on the freeway going slowly, that would not be kewl. Shame on CBS. (2/3/12) Dave's response: CBS's WNEW won't do that in the DC market because they'd have to get permission from Gannett-owned WUSA, our CBS affiliate. In LA, CBS owns both radioer KNX and TVer KNXT, er, KCBS..... Watched a few minutes of Good Morning Washington on channel 7 this morning to see how Steve Chenevey was doing. And I was pleased to see the same professionalism & personality that I liked while he was at FOX5. However, as much as I liked him @ FOX5, for the few minutes I watched GMW this morning, I just found the rest of the GMW kind of fake & cold & won't be switching to GMW. Was there ever any word on why he decided to leave FOX5? (2/3/12) Dave's response: Why did Steve leave 5? $uch a my$tery..... If this is true about Jerry Gray passing, this is a great loss! I remember hearing him on WAMU when he did that country show that (if memory serves me) I first heard air on Friday nights; then moved to Saturdays at noon (this would be in the early 80s) then, of course he hosted Bluegrass Country in the afternoons! Okay..guess it is true! I am listening to Ray Davis and he's dedicating his "Hymntime" to the memory of Jerry Gray! Tom in Denton, MD. The attached two photos were taken this afternoon (2/3/12) on northbound Columbus Street in Old Town Alexandria, just north of King Street. Is it possible that the management of CBS's all new 99.1 WNEW failed to properly vet the driving/parking capabilities of those employees responsible for driving the station's promotional vehicles? At the time the photos were taken, no parking ticket had been issued (yet). But management may want to better ensure that the drivers of company vehicles are properly trained on how to park the station's automobiles on a public street, especially near a busy intersection in the heart of a community like Old Town. :-) (2/3/12) ![]() ![]() Day 34 of the absence of channel 4-3 on my digital OTA lineup. (2/3/12) ![]() ![]() Re: WNEW complaint from earlier... Dead air isn’t always the fault of the anchor. We’ve established that they’re running their own boards. Equipment sometimes fails. The mark of a good anchor is someone who can roll with the glitches and not be the on-air equivalent of a deer in the headlights. Sarah Jacobs did a much better job at covering and smoothing over the glitches than most of the daytime anchors have. WNEW as a whole is getting better. Is there room for improvement and (please) anchor timeslot changes? Sure, but they’re just getting underway. Blaming the anchor for dead air or misplaced commercials is misplacing the blame. An Equal Opportunity Employer (2/3/12) I read with interest the earlier post on the ratings losses for WBAL-TV and WBAL radio. I was not surprised by either. Yes the Oprah factor has had an impact on tv and yes the release of Marianne Bannister has had some impact on the 11pm but allow me to add another element, the news reporter hires. They are not up to the usual standards of WBAL-TV. WJZ-TV has also hired some new reporters and in these eyes they better. JZ has some weaknesses too, but afterall they are the winners in January. Now for WBAL radio-C4 is certainly no replacement for Ron Smith. Nuff said. On the news side Durian seems to be holding onto that slot. However the overall sound is still weak and afterall its the sound that counts. With few exceptions the male voices are irritating and high pitched. And why is it that the anchor of the afternoon block doesn't do any news. She's always introducing someone else to read the news. That just doesn't make any sense. On the positive side Jim Russ is a big improvement on the traffic side BUT the annoying woman is still on the air. There is such a difference from the Russ reports to those in the afternoon. The saga continues! (2/3/12) I thought conservatives believed the market was the ultimate arbitrator...? So why are they always complaining that newspapers, TV stations etc that they label "liberal" dominate the market? Doesn't that domination, by their own Darwinesque philosophy, prove "liberal" to be what is best for our society? Doesn't the fact that some conservative media -- the Washington Times, for example -- are not profitable and have to be financed by billionaire backers go directly against the conservative free-market philosophy? I'm guessing that any responses to my questions will be to declare me a communist, followed by some cut-and-paste complaints about "Obamacare." (2/3/12) Ref: The poster writing about Marianne Banister and WBAL-TV 11...Absolutely correct and he beat me to the punch. And how amazing that Dick Clark and his "United Stations Radio Network" swooped in out of nowhere in early 1986 and got control. Meanwhile, the guy who was running RKO during this debacle, Tom Burchill, skated out of there unscathed for a top gig with the Lifetime cable TV Network. Years later, at a RKO Alumni reunion in New York, Burchill showed up and acted as if we all threw the party in his honor. Most of us wanted to take him into the stairwell and drop him a few flights. (2/3/12) Agreed, the anti-payola statutes were specifically written to have FCC license holders and staff abide by them. The best contemporary example was the revocation of RKO's license of WOR (which involved a complex series of sub rosa accommodations between a license-holder and a corporate parent/subsidiary/partner to the actual assigned FCC licensee). A brass figlagee and four Internets to the lucky contestant who can name the radio legend that tipped off the authorities through on-air banter to the whole sordid affair. Caller East of the Rockies, you're on the air! Genghis Cohen, still pining for the fjords in preternaturally warm Prince William County... Any ideas of when it might come back? --JR (2/3/12) Dave's response: They're still running the main 106.7 signal in digital HD Radio, but all of the out-of-market sports talker relay subchannels are gone..... Does the Right never tire of hearing itself whine about its own "victim" status? Re: "95% of the media is leftist, but thats not enough," etc etc etc. Bullshit. BULL. SHIT. Just because a news outlet isn't crowing the John Birch-crap that you so hunger for, that doesn't make them "leftist." There's an awful lot of territory in between the ultraRight and the ultraLeft, and that's where most news outlets -- and most Americans -- are. Please go back to crying to each other about the tyranny of the Federal Reserve and leave actual political debate to people who can see what's actually going on around them. (2/3/12) I don't have the text of the federal antipayola statutes in front of me...but I strongly believe the laws were written so that license holders were compelled to abide by them - not just networks. In any case, the use of an independent production company to create these shows is outside the purview of the statutes. The thing about license holders goes back, of course, to Alan Freed et al. He didn't work for a TV network - he was employed by a radio station with a FCC license. (2/3/12) [RE DCRTV's Twitter & Facebook pages: WMAL's biased morning show complains about biased media coverage. Huh???] They're a talk show. They're not operating under the phony premise of being a "straight news" program. (2/3/12) WMAL's morning show NEVER claims NOT to be biased. The morning shows on the big 3 TV networks at the same show bias at its worst. (2/3/12) I do not mind WMAL being biased, but when they say something that is flat out not true, they never report on that. Calling themselves a "News" station should violate "truth in advertising" standards (2/3/12) I guess what I don't get is people on the left complaining about a supposed bias have no problem with the biases from outlets they agree with. 95% of the media is leftist, but thats not enough. (2/3/12) The latest Baltimore TV ratings are a perfect example of what poor management and the wrong budget cuts (Marianne Banister) can do to a once market-leading station. The poor management situation is also killing WBAL radio, now being beaten by WCBM. Programing decisions should be made by programing people not the corporate suits. Proof positive that inferior products can win the numbers battle. (Not a sermon - just a thought). This time around I will be anonymous. (2/3/12) Heard this on WNEW driving home. 12:30-12:45am. Anchor reads the National Mall temperatures and some sports anchor talking about hockey scores came on over her. Then dead air. A few minutes later. National Mall temperatures and then about 20 seconds of dead air, then a commercial. Then two minutes later, I'd say around 12:38am, the anchor is talking about some Baltimore shooting and mid-sentence, dead air! This time dead-air for like a full minute. Then 12:41am, the anchor lady went to traffic... no one there. Then she went to a weather guy, also not there. About another 15 seconds of dead air and a commercial. Ouch! Whoever thinks WNEW anchors are getting better... no way Jose! College radio with a CBS logo. (2/3/12) I wrote about WNEW having a lot of dead air when I was driving to make deliveries between 12:30 and 1 am. On my way back home, it was even worse! Listening between 2:15-2:30am. At 2:23am the male anchor was reading a story and in mid-sentence, silence. Dead air. Not just for a moment. For three minutes!! I looked at my car radio clock. 2:23 until 2:26 am. Not that I needed sports at :25/:55 anyways. I guess it's not the anchors fault. Seems like the engineering staff is keeping the station on air with some duct tape! I actually don't really like WTOP that much, but at least they stay on the air. Can't seriously compete when people can't hear you. Mr. Cuccinelli's comments on DC rat laws was first reported here, tin DCRTV mailbag, then DCist and ARLNow picked it up. New organizations from around the world, including The India Times, ran stories on Mr. Cuccinnelli's interpretation of DC's rat laws. Rush Limbaugh picked up the story and slammed DC Council member Mary Cheh for introducing "the rat bill" that became law. Then Drudge, of course, picked it up. WTOP then ran a piece on their website outlining each line Mr. Cuccinelli said and tagged most as "false." The Washington Post said Mr. Cuccinelli was "confused," and Politifact rated his comments "[Liar, Liar] Pants on Fire," their highest grade for untruthfulness. OK, so now, about a month later, Mr. Cuccinelli goes on WMAL this morning to talk about a new "Rat Summit" for DC, MD, and VA. He stated clearly that he does not understand the DC law, but again, he confused laws for raccoons with laws for rats. He labeled them all "Varmints." OK, if a statement you make as the commonwealth's Attorney General is covered around the world, and news organizations are all telling you consistently that you are wrong, don't you think it was Mr. Cucciinelli's duty to actually try to understand the DC law, and communicate his knowledge to the citizens of the commonwealth, and WMAL listeners? True Clear Channel should invest money into local talent but between saving bucks on the local front and the public's "love" for the celebrities, hate to say it but I wouldn't be surprised that within five years if not sooner that we really would see a few stations doing Ryan Seacrest 24/7 and if not Seacrest chances are it would be some other celebrity. During the interview Seth I can recall Seth mentioning about how once the plug is pulled on TV's The Family Guy ( which considering how bad some of those recent episodes are, well that should has been done sometime ago ), MacFarlane said that he would consider taking the show to radio and syndicate it around the nation for a 24/7 format. The negative nature of the postings in the Mailbag concerning the Post are simplistic. The Post is still a great newspaper, a wonderful source of news and information that has provided me with countless hours of information, enlightenment, and excellent writing. The Post's investigative stories delve into issues that no other news source does. The series about the elementary school class in PG County that Abe Polin and Mel Cohen offered to pay college tuition for is an example. So is the recent story of the scandal of the nonprofit that was supposed to use HUD grant money to provide housing for wayward young men. The Post is the single most comprehensive news source for readers in the Washington metro area. I find the op-ed pages to be of the highest quality. I find enjoyable, interesting, and well-written the articles of Charles Krauthammer, Michael Gerson, Kathleen Parker, E.J. Dionne, Richard Cohen, etc. Some other writers such as Petula Dvorak, John Kelly, Ezra Klein, Steve Pearlstein are also excellent. I don't think that the NYT or the WSJ compares when one looks at the quality and depth of columnists. This being said, there are many difficulties with the Post. As noted in the Mailbag, the quality of the editing has eroded. I think this is due to both reduced revenue supporting the paper and the generally weaker writing skills of the post-baby boom generation. It is what it is. The Post suffers from the same problem that network TV suffers from: the growing number of specialty publications and interests. The Post's sports section no longer is where I turn to find comprehensive sports coverage. It can't beat ESPN. When I check sports scores, I look at the sports headlines on ESPN's home page. The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg provide specialization in business news, etc. The networks are still functioning albeit to a smaller audience. I think there is still room for a general newspaper. It is constantly evolving. The Post's problem is that it is not a paper of primarily Washington area news with enough the basic national, business, sports, and lifestyle news to serve its readers need, rather it attempts to comprehensively cover the world (including business, sports, style, etc.) and the Washington metro area. The Post, unlike the NYT, the WSJ, and USA Today is not marketed as a national paper. Perhaps only the LA Times does this. I like the comprehensiveness of the Post. I like the comprehensiveness of the obits. But the trend is for the Post to specialize. Its business section is being neglected, as is its coverage of broadcasting. I don't understand all the complaints about the thinness of the Post. There's a lot more info than I can read in the average day. I will say that there has been a decision in the Sports and Business sections to not be comprehensive. The Sports section is more focused on Washington teams. I am a baby boomer around 60. I have always enjoyed newspapers. I am retired. I don't always have the time for the longer features in the Post, but I sometimes do, and an grateful for the opportunity to partake of them. I think today's generation is missing out on something valuable by not reading newspapers like the Post. That's my analysis for now. If I was in school, I'd like to do a doctoral dissertation on the Post. Tuesday evening on my drive around the towers at the 270 split, every imaging element I heard during the John Batchelor show positioned WMAL as 105.9. No mention of 630 anywhere. And if you poke WMAL.COM into your browser, you are routed to 105.9 WMAL (and oh yeah, 630 AM). Farewell, Mighty 630. It was a wonderful ride. (2/1/12) Dave's response: Wouldn't be surprised if Cumulus is planning something "new" for 630 later in 2012, to get the DC cluster back to three signals again. How about Fox Sports? Or maybe Cumulus could make a deal to sell 630 to Salem for 105.1. Or sell it to CBS, which could move 1580's programming there. Hmmm..... WNEW...Approximately 12:50 PM today...Jenny Glick goes to a break/stop set and what sounded like a 99.1 promotion and a 60 second spot played at the same for 60 seconds. Is anybody there listening? Enjoy! (2/1/12) Dave's response: I love Chris Gordon. One of DC TV's journalism greats. But he looks like he's had some face work. (1/31/12) WBEY-FM 97.9 in Crisfield is still wreaking havoc with 98 Rock's signal as far north as Easton and Denton. WBEY is licensed at 6,000 watts and the signal is supposed to be directional to protect 98 Rock but they come in like a local in Cambridge and the two stations fight it out in southern Talbot and Caroline counties making reception impossible. I contacted 98 Rock about the problem and received no response. Apparently they aren't concerned since my area is far out on the fringe of their signal but since many other Baltimore stations come in loud and clear here it's a shame that 98 Rock can no longer be heard. I suspect that they will become much more concerned in the spring and summer when signal ducting becomes a factor and they are interfered with by WBEY as far north as Kent Island and Annapolis as happened before when WBEY operated in this fashion. I still recall the famous “Jimmy’s World”, by Janet Cooke. The ultimate failure of any journalism enterprise is the destruction of its credibility when it has to admit that it has published a falsehood following revelations like Watergate and “The Pentagon Papers”. When you do something like that, you set the bar of credibility for yourself at a much higher level than perhaps your competitors. Indeed, until Mark Felt came forward, some wags were saying that “Deep Throat” lived in “Jimmy’s World”. Unfortunately, the Post is in an irreversible tailspin with the engines in reverse thrust or props in reverse pitch. Recovery is impossible. It’s only a matter of time before it ceases publication. The Washington Post will survive as a business. But, it will no longer publish a daily newspaper. Nor am I suggesting anyone get fired. I'm suggesting that if the WNEW is selling us that they'll do more news that matters to us, one of two things is true. One, this story clearly "doesn't matter", and therefore should have no place on WNEW, unless their platitudes to the Washington Post, the Examiner and on their promos were just hot-air. Or two, it does matter to a small group in Spotsylvania County, but WNEW is okay broadcasting sloppy journalism. I'm not asking it to be Hemingway. I'm asking a CBS owned station to not resort to "copy and paste". I don't expect it to sound like Hemingway. However, I expect the writer to actually give it SOME attention. Try re-writing it. It took me about 45 seconds to do. Again, WNEW should apologize for sloppy journalism, even if it is one instance out of a thousand. - Joe in Arlington (1/31/12) I realize it's only one week but it was interesting to see that WCBM has passed WBAL in the ratings. It looks like with the passing of Ron Smith, the additional hours of news aren't paying off. It appears that while WCBM has maintained its approach as the hard right talk station, WBAL has become a lot fluffier. There are more entertainment features and more interviews about softer topics and TV shows. I miss the thoughtful, intelligent talk the station used to be known for. Is Dave Sandler gone for good? Does anyone have an update? I've heard Jim Russ doing traffic in the mornings. That is one improvement for which WBAL should be applauded. Nobody at the network liked her including the executive producer. The only reason she was hired is because her husband was a scout at the time. From what I heard he left last season to go to another team. Now this past season Amber Theoharris wasn't brought back in a full-term reporting duties and was paid by a freelance day rate. MASN has been cutting back there costs ever since Peter Angelos booted his son from running the network. This is one reason why they will always be a second rate regional sports network to Comcast and to other regional networks like NESN and YES. DCMemories.com... You'll see that the station had been devoting a half-hour to news, weather and sports in 1958. After the Paar switch in January '59, Paul Shields was dropped and Rolf Hertsgaard was moved from 11:15 to the top of the 11 o'clock hour. Other interesting changes... at WRC-TV 4, Tippy Stringer was out while Frank Forrester was in for the weather. I'm just glad the Post is still good for a chuckle, and that's what the world really needs these days. Unless you want to pay another buck or so for some New York newspaper that's all accurate but about New Yorkers or whatever. (1/31/12) Dave's response: You're right. I get so much "comedic material" from the print Post. Plus, being self-employed, I can write the subscription cost off my taxes as a business deduction..... Did Mary Katherine say this morning she suspects her husband watches porn on his IPad while he sits on the toilet? Parents don’t listen to WMAL's Morning Majority with your kids in the car, it’s almost a raunchy as Howard Stern! So, it appears Freddie was telling us "smart people who apply themselves to be successful didn't vote for Newt." It's a Great day in South Carolina! (1/31/12) I'm amazed that the Post has become such a bad joke, but nobody at the paper seems too concerned. My few contacts over there tell me nobody is held responsible for any of the embarrassing mistakes that have been published in the last few months. (1/31/12) CBS News is looking for some fill-in freelance video editors. They use FCP 7. Contact Bob McKinley at BTM@cbsnews.com. (1/31/12) I have to think there are infrastructure problems at WNEW keeping experienced anchors from smoothly running their elements. Slow computers, crappy GUI, consumer-grade equipment are just a few things that might be getting in the way. So, it may not be the anchors' fault if the equipment they're using is not up to the task. The constant dropouts during liveshots keep hgappening at times when the anchors shouldn't be doing anything at all, which tells me the problem is in the station's audio system. Damn computer-run newscasts, certainly not as simple as the old days of missing a cart fire, or losing an old analog cellphone signal, or having a switch bounce. (1/31/12) From a Mailbag post:---DO YOU HAVE ANY ACTUAL BROADCAST EXPERIENCE?? Do you? As before, "shut (the f--k) up!" Whomever this poster is should do a bit of growing up. You're in a business that eat's it's young. Your attitude will eventually cause you real problems. A course in etiquette might just make your attitude adjust. Whether or not someone is in our industry doesn't give you the right to use the type of language you must have grown up around. TKX (1/31/12) To the "F-in" dude so worked up about WNEW having board ops: 1. Anchors everywhere, including network and top 15 markets, combo board op now. 2. You're not supposed to freebase the Prozac. (1/31/12) Are they still paying Bob Woodward for anything? If he's on retainer he should be the poo-bah editor for ANY story related to Watergate. Make him work a little, keep him moving. (1/31/12) Dave's response: Bob Woodward? Wasn't it Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman who broke the Watergate scandal? Ha ha ha..... Want to truly lay in the blame for the condition radio is in today? Chalk it up to the overinflated prices paid for stations back when the feeding frenzy began, and the resulting debt those owners are saddled with. I just read this morning (Taylor on Radio Info) that KXLI - a Las Vegas station at 94.5 - sold at auction for $305.1K (pending FCC approval). The original asking price was nearly $9 million. Now that values are more realistic, everyone is scrambling to meet that note. Ergo, goodbye news departments, morning show sidekicks, promotions directors, midday and weekend talent... (1/31/12) I've been a viewer of the Today Show for years...until the new CBS new morning show debuted. I gave it a listen and for the first time it seems that CBS might be on the right track. NBC may be vulnerable particularly since they put Ann Curry in her new position. I find the first hout of the CBS show to be quite good. I'm not so sure about hour two with Gayle King. This will be an interesting battle to observe. (1/31/12) [RE Washington Post running Nixon correction:] Is there anyone left at the paper who was there? Doesn't appear so. (1/31/12) [RE Washington Post running Nixon correction:] I'm not sure why I am a subscriber to that rag anymore. (1/31/12) Dave's response: I'm paid up through 2/25. But with the latest rate hike for a newspaper that is clearly not as good as it was, and full of silly errors to boot, I am seriously contemplating cancelling my subscription..... I wasn't even alive and I knew nixon resigned. The post needs to stop hiring these public school kids and get the catholic school ones back in the news room. They might be republican though. (1/31/12) Gotta love that Post and how often it trips over its liberal agenda. Be it creating Pulizter Prize winning stories of inner city blight featuring kids that did not exist, or creating tales of impeachment that did not happen, their stories often reflect what they wish happened, rather than what does. Hint to the fact checkers at TWP HQ: Most recent impeachment action was against a Democrat. But you didn't cover Whitewater either. So that's twice you went after Nixon, and can't even get the facts straight, but failed to go after Clinton when the facts were available from multiple sources. And you say there is no liberal bias or agenda? The stories you spin, the lies you tell, the webs of deciet you weave. How about putting that mea culpa above the fold as a headline on the front page with an apology! (1/31/12) Andy Parks has run his own board for years back when that wasn't the standard at WMAL to today on WTNT. He juggles 3 computer record/playbacks, 6 phone lines, ISDN and 4 other studio mics, writes his own material and gets his own coffee. It can be done and sound professional. Charlie / Arlington (1/31/12) Dave's response: Oh, just heard WMAL run part of a Levin promo in the middle of a traffic report. Kinda of a WNEW-ish blunder. Ha ha ha..... ("The Spotsylvania fire thing wasn't plagiarism, it was two different news outlets doing lazy jobs of rewriting the same press release. The Spotsylvania Volunteer Fire Dept press release (spotsyfire.org) was the source for both reports and used virtually the same wording.") Thanks for the clarification. So the answer is not plagarism. Just sloppy journalism. Well, I think both Fredericksburg.com and WNEW still should apologize for it. Realistically, I can live with Fredericksburg.com doing it. They're such a small outlet, they don't probably have too much money to hire seasoned journalists. However, WNEW should know better. If Steve Swenson and Robert Sanchez are trying to sell us 1010 WINS in Washington, that isn't it. Spending many years in New York City, I can't remember WINS or WCBS 880 practicing such sloppy journalism. If that's what I should expect from WNEW, then I'm disappointed I bought into their hype! (1/31/12) To those asking: WNEW anchors run their own board. WTOP anchors also run their own board. I hope that puts the speculation to rest. I have great respect for all those who do it. It's a very difficult juggling act. -- Ari Ashe (1/31/12) I love how the kids on this board are resorting to "shut (the f---k) up and stick to your limited view of the world from the comfort of your arm chairs". If these are the people that are now starting in our craft, I can see why everyone else thinks we are screwed. I just don't understand the anger. With that being said, first hand view here, WNEW is a "combo-operation" - meaning the anchor runs the board in addition to reading their stories. I know a lot of stations that "use board ops for the news anchors" - but they are either in New York (not sure if that is even the case anymore) or they are a music/talk station with the news person in another room (or city), or they just waltz in and do sit at the second mic and read their report. So - the poster is right in cases, the definitive answer to the question about WNEW is above. (1/31/12) Hey Dave, do you think there is any chance of a Jack like station coming to DC? Something like that would be a major sigh of relief in such a crappy market...I know there is 102.7 but their signal stinks in northern Virginia... (1/31/12) Dave's response: I just don't see it happening in the DC market. Oldies stations tend to skew to older listeners and there's a trend for music stations to skew to younger demos, which advertisers demand..... The morning show history on Key 103 (WAFY) in Frederick is certainly an interesting story of how to shoot yourself in the foot. Dan Stevens did well until he went off to war and was replaced by Ed Rodriguez and Delana. The News-Post had an article saying that they had a 10 share of the audience and that the station's ratings had never been higher. When Delana left, Rodriguez continued with Rona and they fell a little bit to an 8.7. Ed left in late 2007 and they brought Dick Gunner in with Rona. Boy, those ratings dropped into the 4's and we all thought he was gone for sure. Then, it was Rona and Stacy and the numbers came back up a little to about a 5. After they stopped playing adult/contemporary, their stock in trade, WAFY became some kind of club music/ dance station... just what's needed in Frederick... NOT! And, of course, there were the final cries for help: Dick Gunner posting his desire to leave on open social networking sites, giving Rona no real notice before bringing some guy named Tommy in to replace her. And where are their ratings now? In the toilet where they belong. Of course, let's not forget about the program directors that they've blown through: Randy James, Chris Purio, Mark Pritchard and even Dick Gunner himself! What a mess that little station in Middletown has become. Sad... just sad! Yes, "bud," talkers have board ops. Not every all-newser does. WNEW is NOT a "talker.") And you completely ignored my other points. If WNEW does, in fact, have board ops, why has it taken them weeks to get their act together? And you have chosen to ignore the other poster who made the best point of all, in this discussion -- it doesn't matter to the audience whether it's the anchor or a board op. (1/30/12) RE:NO BOARD OPS FOR NEWS ANCHORS. When I read that posting I had to laugh out loud. Why? I work at a music intensive station and we also share our building with our NEWS/Talk AM station. They do 3 hour news block in AM drive and YES they use board ops for the news anchors. You say you can't think of a station that does? Dude are you even in the business at all. Just down the highway there are two other markets. There are stations in those markets that are NEWS/Talk and yes they use board ops fo r their news people. Take the advice I initially posted and just "shut (the f---k) up already. Since you claim to know the business haven't you at least perused the ads that sometimes appear in publications like "All Acess" that sometimes run help wanted ads from stations seeking board ops for both news and sports formated talkers? Have you bud? I said before most of the petty complaining was coming from at least 3 assholes. It now seems that all three have posted rebuttles and they still prove they know nothing of the business. That even means you, Mr. 40 year Pro! Like before just shut (the f---k) up and stick to your limited view of the world from the comfort of your arm chairs. (1/30/12) [RE DCRTV's Twitter & Facebook pages: Cannibalism of children jested about on Mike Wise's show on WJFK this morning. Adverterisers have gotta be jumpin for joy!] unfortunately, no one listens to Mike Wise to complain....how can the unemployment rate be so high, when Wise has 3 gigs???? (1/30/12) Dave, Oh how I wished for a better news station to compete against WTOP. I don't want NPR, but I thought I had heard there would be a bit more in-depth coverage and less, well, lunacy. But alas, I tuned in Friday PM to hear this gem: "The First Lady of Maryland apologizes for her comments on Gay Marriage". That was it. That sentence was the complete report, and on to sports. In-depth? W, as the children say on their text machines, TF? What comments, made where, in what context? Toss us a bone, here, WNEW All News 99.1, and stop reading headlines. Don't assume we know what you know. Condescension is the lowest form of insult. Inform and entertain me. Be the antidote to Mike Moss. Maybe they should have those teletype sound beds... -- Uncle Frank in Arlington (1/30/12) Enjoy 106.7 Junks, Wise, and can take the ribald 'liberal hating' Rouhier in doses (btw Rouhier, if you were selling hot dogs off a DC mall cart, maybe not such a great strategy to put up a hate sign that turns away half your buyers even though your virulent noxious views might fit within the bosom brain of your corporate CBS bosses). Where is Bill Rohland mentioned on the 'Fan' websight ? I must have missed it. Don't like Rohland politics, but respect his local sports views. I was going to say about why I can't listen to Arrington because he is an unlistenable self absorbed blowhard but I am running out of gas. (1/30/12) What the hell is "plagerism"? (1/30/12) To the mailbagger who is so convinced the WNEW anchors should be held blameless for sloppy production skills ... One. How do you know WNEW uses board ops? I don't know of any local station that offers its newscasters that luxury, including WTOP. Do you know something the rest of us don't? Two. Even if they do use board ops, those personnel should most certainly be up to speed by now. They've been live for over a week, and supposedly had more than a week of "dry runs" before that. Does it really take them this long to learn to fire the correct sound at the correct time? Three. I've been on-air talent with many board ops over the years, and once you establish a rhythm -- which in my experience rarely takes more than one or two shifts -- there is no dead air, no misfires, no missed cues. etc I wish I could excuse the WNEW anchors this way, but that explanation just doesn't fly. (1/30/12) Good to hear from Donnie Simpson. On a personal note, finally a post from a broadcaster with 40 years of experience over six decades, fame, and near universal popularity who agrees with me that [good] deejays should be able to choose the music. Remember when all you experts, armchair and "real" told me how I didn't know anything? Well not knowing anything doesn't keep one from being right. The line to suck it forms to the left. - ZombieWoof (1/30/12) Hopefully the people wanting Donnie Simpson to return to the morning drive slot at WPGC will finally let it go. It will not happen that bridge is burned and will not be rebuilt and I do not think that either side wants it to be rebuilt. Sam Rodgers(Market Manager) and Program Directors Rob Scorpio and Micheal Saunders are long gone. Steve Swenson(NEW Market Manager) and Jason Kidd(NEW Program Director) are not even in the Donnie talk. I am happy that Donnie is at peace and that he has moved on with his life and CBS Radio has moved on as well its a marriage that both are HAPPY to be done with I am sure. (1/30/12) The Spotsylvania fire thing wasn't plagiarism, it was two different news outlets doing lazy jobs of rewriting the same press release. The Spotsylvania Volunteer Fire Dept press release (spotsyfire.org) was the source for both reports and used virtually the same wording. Not an uncommon practice, but not what editors are really looking for when they hand you a release to rewrite, either. (1/30/12) RE: (The poster saying we don't know what we're talking about with his shut the f---up post). I have over 40 years of on-air broadcast experience and I don't really care who is running the board and neither does the listener. It's sloppy, sounds bad and makes the on-air person sound stupid; it doesn't take a genius to report the news without unending amounts of dead air. And until this station gets it right, posters will continue to post whether you like it or not. Do Chill... (1/30/12) I was introduced to Donnie Simpson by a mutual friend a few years ago and I agree with those who say he’s a class act. He couldn’t have been nicer or more down to earth, even commented that he was a P1 listener of the station where I currently work. Radio as an industry and the DC market in particular are poorer for not having his talent. Here’s hoping he is back on the air soon (although if he were to take his talents somewhere in which he’s not competing against us, that would be OK too, haha). –Brian Oliger, WTOP (1/30/12) Dave's response: Music-based broadcast radio in major markets like DC is pretty much getting rid of any major talent over age 40. If I was Jack Diamond at WRQX, I'd be worried..... Dave, I am a little confused. Greg Duncan is doing Spanish Cont. on WYRE? Is this WYRE AM in Annapolis, or WYRE FM in Florida? Steve Kingston doesn't own WYRE AM in MD, and when I tuned in at 1pm today they were still running the KHZ format. (1/30/12) Dave's response: Whoops. I think you're right. WYRE in question is not the one in Annapolis. OK, so Greg Dunkin, who's an expert in Anglo hot AC stations, is going be programming a Spanish contemporary station in Florida that has the same call letters as a station in Annapolis does. Got it. I think..... Sad news about Stacey at Key 103 in Frederick. Seems like whenever there's a choice..Nassau can be relied on making the wrong one. (1/30/12) Dave, sorry to back-to-back post to the Mailbag, but I have to respond to the very articulate fellow who wrote -- two times? three? four? -- in the same email that everyone should "shut the f@%k up!!!" Specifically, his claim that "one loser throwing around the word 'plagerism' needs to learn some 'legaleeeeeeeze'. You are allowed to read the first 50 words of any published article as it's printed as long as you credit the source." Yes, the guy who wrote about "plagerism" obviously didn't know what he was talking about...but could you please direct me to the law that says "You are allowed to read the first 50 words of any published article as it's printed as long as you credit the source"? I'm pretty sure the fair use doctrine isn't nearly that black and white. Oh, and by the way -- I won't shut the fuck up for you or anybody else. (1/30/12) RE: WNEW: Please all of you shut up already! First things first. The anchors there don't have sloppy production skills? Why, they aren't the ones running the on air board! The board ops are. Some of you do an excellant job of showing that YOU HAVE NO ACTUAL ON AIR experience! Like I said before.................shut (the f----k) up already. The one loser throwing around the word "plagerism" needs to learn some "legaleeeeeeeze". You are allowed to read the first 50 words of any published article as it's printed as long as you credit the source. I have read all the postings criticizing (sp) that station and while some have merit the others are just plain petty. I suspect they are coming from the SAME THREE assholes. Let me give you arm chair critics a little lesson in board oping a station. Here's the best lesson I can think of. Once a baseball team in the American league switch their local originating station. The new station, even though they were an established news talk outlet didn't know a blessed thing about originating a game. There was dead air all over the place. People were crying the blues left and right. Why the problem? Because station management thought any asshole can board op a broadcast. People don't want to admit it but most stations have to hire kids who are just getting their feet wet in broadcasting to do the job. Looks like the same scenerio over at WNEW. Once again to you arm chair critics ......................... just shut (the f----k) up! It will all straighten itself out! (1/30/12) My "dream team" of on-air personalities would definitely include Donnie...along with Weasel, Damien, Cerphe, etc etc....sigh (1/30/12) Donnie Simpson = class act. (1/30/12) I listened to 1010 WINS for awhile yesterday to hear how this all news format should be done. And of course, no dead air or anything that goes on at WNEW. This morning at approximately 10:30 AM with Jenny Glick, she sounded confused as usual. The news sounder played through an entire spot followed by her introducing the entertainment report with a very loud noise or tone at the beginning of the report and again an even louder noise at the end. I like WNEW but something needs to be done with the production end. I like Nancy Lyons, but she probably has the most dead air of all, especially coming out of a spot set. When I checked her bio, she certainly has the credentials, but this format must have anchors with production skills as well! (1/30/12) re: WaPo rates; back in Sept. 2010, I posted here that I've been paying $38 for 26 weeks, that's their "promotional" rate. Ask for their Retention Dept. and threaten/beg/cry the blues and you, too, can get this rate. Last fall, I started doing this for my dad's account also. It's a pain in the neck to do twice a year but worth the savings. Anymore, I only care about the Wed. grocery ads, plus I don't like reading the paper online. Need to give the eyeballs a break. (1/30/12) I can't believe the continued production errors I keep hearing on WNEW -- and I am among their well-wishers! 10am, just now, they hit the top of the hour sounder and NOBODY HOME. 20-30 seconds of DEAD AIR. I know what the problem is, everyone is expecting a network newscast of some kind, not a local reader. PLEASE pay a few bucks and get AP radio, CNN radio, or anyone else that's available. Fill up that clock for a few minutes and let your friggen anchors get to their seats during the hourly crossover. (1/30/12) Donnie is the best! 10 songs might be on the high side, as I believe the top 40 stations now are playing less than that on a given hour. Long Live Donnie! (1/30/12) Donnie, there will never be another you! (1/30/12) The following was posted on Donnie Simpson's Facebook page..... I signed off the air 2 years ago yesterday. Can you believe it's been that long? It was a day I will never forget. I had been on the radio since I was 15 years old and for 40 years it had been all the fun I could stand, but that 41st year was hell. I so hated the place I was at and couldn't wait for the show to end that morning. I had been in misery for a year, but my deliverance was just hours away. I chose January 29th for two reasons. First of all, I wanted to get to the year 2010. I started in 1969, so that would mean I worked in 6 decades. That's pretty cool. Secondly, my birthday was on the 30th and I refused to take that hell into another year of my life. Thus, the 29th. I remember so vividly all of the TV cameras, reporters, and well wishers there to share what they kept calling this historic moment. I was surprised by all of the attention, but it seems that they all viewed this as the end of an era. Because of that, The Washington Post even placed my departure on the front page, above the fold. I couldn't believe that. Does this mean all of that? The end of an era? Wow! While that's quite flattering, it was very sad to me. When I look at radio now, I understand what they were saying. It seems that personality is suppressed, they play the same 10 songs over and over, and no one has the freedom to express themselves musically. Some of the highlights of my career involved not just finding good music, but stepping outside the box with the freedom to play it. I broke Elton John's "Bennie and The Jets" and watched it become his biggest selling single ever. I came back from a trip to London one year, armed with a new group I'd heard in a taxi on the way to Wimbledon with Sugar Ray Leonard, called Swing Out Sister. I dropped the needle on it and watched them shoot up the charts here in America. To this day, E.U. credits me with breaking their biggest song ever, "Da Butt". It went all the way to #1 in the country and is the last GO-Go song to do so. That's sad really. Please don't read this as me tooting my own horn, because that's not what this is about. The horn I toot is a fog horn to warn radio that it's in dangerous waters. You can't do radio without ears. You have to let your stars shine. There are young people out there right now who know and Love music, but have to work with their hands tied and their ears closed because management 'knows' their listeners tastes better than them. It reminds me of a conversation I had with my boy Howard Stern some years ago. We were both expressing amazement at how they can pay you all this money to do this and then want to tell you how to do it. I want to thank all of the people who tell me daily "We miss you" and "You need to come back." You have no idea how much that means to me. I miss you too, but I'm not so sure I'll be back now. On my last show I was so careful to say this is not a retirement, just a break and you will hear from me again. Two years and several offers later, I cannot say with conviction that it's still just a break, but I can say with conviction that I can only come back it if it's fun again. I'm just not sure it would be. I was so blessed to have a job I Loved for so many years. My whole career, I couldn't wait for Monday morning at 6. The last year, I couldn't wait for Friday morning at 10. Now I know that a lot of people suffer thru jobs they hate for many years, but having fun was my job. I can't have fun with a lot of BS going on around me. Toxic environments just don't work for me, so I bounced. Out of all the coverage of my departure I saw on TV two years ago, the the most poignant comment came from my boy Jim Vance at 11:30 that night on NBC4. He was talking about managements demand that I do it their way and Jim said "Donnie wouldn't do that, because he couldn't do that." My Man. That was so on point. I can't do someone else's version of Donnie Simpson. I can only do me. That sounded like masturbation didn't it. "I can only do me." That's funny. I better end this, I'm starting to sound like Howard. I miss you and I Love you, but Thank God Almighty, I'm Free At Last! (1/30/12) Clicked on 99.1 yesterday. What's up with the rushing sound while the anchors are reading. Is it their compression system? I was listening in the car on a good system This is quite annoying. By the way, during my listening I heard the same half-hour repeated, headlines and all. Recorded? (1/30/12) Hi Dave! Heres a scoop- Stacey Lynn from the " Stace and Tommy show " was fired Friday afternoon, no reason just dumped. ( First Rona then her ) Now Tommy Jordan is still there with a weird sidekick, rumor has it they are grooming him to take over his own show called " Yep you guessed it The Tommy Jordan Show. (1/30/12) Dave's response: I assume you're talking about Frederick's Key 103.1, WAFY, owned by bankrupt Nassau..... Speaking of the Post..The sports section today was record lean 4 pages this morning. I guess it could have been smaller if they had put the classieds on page 4. Anyone have a contact e-mail address for all-news 99.1? Don't seem to see one on the web page. Hey, who chooses the video clips for the news on NBC4? The clips they pick are so stupid or outdated-check it out. This morning on the network business segment the anchor talked about rising beef prices. NBC4 dubbed in 30 seconds of various steaks being grilled. I half expected video of cows grazing. Regards Biff (1/30/12) Dave I thought you might like to see the WNEW news cruiser. At Occupy DC camp before Sunup this morning. (1/30/12) ![]() "Hey Dave don’t Tony Pann look a lot like the guy on the originalMission Impossible series who was real dumb and the muscle for the IMF?Who do you think is dumber?" It's no contest at all. You are. - ZombieWoof (1/30/12) Is it plagarism or sloppy journalism at WNEW?? I was driving at 8:07 pm when I heard an anchor, someone named Chris Encarlo, say the following: "Spotsylvania County firefighters have spent much of Sunday battling a large brush fire on land off Jackson Trail West. Spotsylvania Deputy Fire Chief Monty Willaford said the fire burned fields, woods and a couple of old sheds on both National Park Service and private property, but firefighters were able to keep it reaching any nearby homes or barns. Area residents reported seeing heavy smoke from the blaze on nearby Courthouse Road." I know this because I heard it again later Sunday night again. I get home and do a Google search. I found an article from someone named Bill Freehling at Fredericksburg.com posted much earlier in the day, which read: "Spotsylvania County firefighters have spent much of Sunday afternoon battling a large brush fire on land off Jackson Trail West, said Spotsylvania Deputy Fire Chief Monty Willaford. The fire, whose origin is unknown, burned fields, woods and a couple of old sheds on both National Park Service and private property, but Willaford said firefighters kept it from reaching any nearby homes or barns. Area residents reported seeing heavy smoke from the blaze on nearby Courthouse Road. The original 911 call came in at 2:53 p.m." Here is the URL: fredericksburg.com. I'm no lawyer, but that's plagarism if I've ever seen it. WNEW should credit Fredericksburg.com if they did enterprise reporting, rather than pass it off as its own. It's like when WNEW says we go LIVE to weather late at night at :11 and it's clearly a recording. The program director, Robert Sanchez, owes listeners an apology for plagarism. If this is the journalism I should expect from WNEW, copy others and pass it off as its own, I hope listeners call them out on it. Until I hear an apology, my presets will not have 99.1 FM on it. Joe in Arlington (1/30/12) "Hey Dave don’t Tony Pann look a lot like the guy on the original Mission Impossible series who was real dumb and the muscle for the IMF? Who do you think is dumber? Tony Pann or Peter Lupus" First off genius, it's "doesn't Tony" not "don't Tony" and second, why is Tony dumb? Because he questions global warming/climate change/whatever you want to call it? He's entitled to his opinion, and I thought he did a great job of saying people can disagree but still talk about the issue intelligently. Too bad you missed that point.... (1/30/12) I wonder if anyone at Metro Radio noticed that the domain 1420wkcw.com expired on January 5. (1/30/12) I'm curious about the 1959 WBAL Flashback ad announcing a new 11:15 start time for Jack Paar. What was the previous start time? I was 5 at the time, so I don't personally remember. I have read that in the Tonight Show's early years, there was a 15-minute "fill" segment of the show, which was sent down the network to cover those local stations then, that didn't have a full 30-minute local newscast at 11. I don't think WBAL did, so I presume the existing start time for Tonight for them was at 11:30 (since the ad is promoting a new start time) - but what had they been airing from 11:15 to 11:30, that would be replaced with the arrival of this new start time? Maybe there was a late network newscast at 11, then 15 minutes of WBAL local news, followed by the Tonight Show at 11:30. Carson didn't like doing that "fill" segment. One of his early negotiating points in mid 60s, once he established his popularity with the viewers and had a little leverage to use on NBC, was to get rid of that 11:15-11:30 portion altogether. For a time, he didn't even participate in that segment, letting Ed McMahon and Skitch Henderson handle things until 11:30, when Carson would open, for the full network, the remaining 90 minutes of the show with his usual monologue.
