Allan Horlick, WUSA's general manager, see benefits of using so-called "one-man bands": "One of the concerns we heard from the newsroom is that the quality has got to suffer," he says. "The quality goes up," and the staff generates more content than can fit in each newscast. But many veterans view the practice as a step down. Gary Reels left WUSA in 2008 for several reasons, but among them was the prospect of becoming a one-man band and taking a 40 percent pay cut as Channel 9 renegotiated deals with its unions to allow reporters to shoot and edit their own footage. Several CNN stars contribute to '60 Minutes' on CBS. And CBS executives, mindful that Katie Couric's contract expires in a little over a year, have talked to Anderson Cooper of CNN about an anchor job, according to two TV veterans informed of the meeting." More: Cooper shoots down the rumor, so reports the Politico..... Kafanov To RT - 3/1 - FishbowlDC tells us that Lucy Kafanov has been spotted as an on-air analyst and producer for Russia Today. Could O'Malley-Ehrlich Rematch Launch Radio War? - 2/26 - "The Kendel And Bob Show" has become a Saturday morning fixture on Baltimore's WBAL talk radio (1090 AM), offering Maryland's former first lady and former Republican governor a weekly forum to share their thoughts on everything from international affairs to domestic matters. Could "The Katie And Martin Show" with the current Maryland first lady and the current Democratic governor soon be airing on the same station? It's one of several ideas that have been kicked around by WBAL radio programmers in the likely event that Robert Ehrlich announces next month that he wants a rematch with Martin O'Malley. Ed Kiernan, general manager of WBAL, said he would like to keep the Ehrlichs on the air as long as possible and has asked some "terrific lawyers" to look at the station's options for complying with the Federal Communication Commission's equal time rule should Ehrlich decide to run. WaPo Ends Quinn's "Party" - 2/26 - Sally Quinn, whose first novel was titled "Regrets Only," doesn't have any second thoughts about the writing of her "dysfunctional family" drama in the Washington Post last week. "I have absolutely no regrets at all," Quinn told the Politico. While Quinn isn't sorry about writing it, others - from family members to online critics to the paper's top editor - are. Quinn said Executive Editor Marcus Brauchli told her that if he'd seen it first, he wouldn't have run the column explaining the "dueling weddings" of her son and stepson's daughter and squabbles among family members. Small Profit For Sirius XM - 2/25 - Sirius XM Radio posts a small profit for the fourth quarter of 2009 as it added subscribers and cut costs. The satellite radio broadcaster was on the brink of bankruptcy just a year ago, hurt by plummeting auto sales, which meant fewer of its radios were installed in new vehicles. It's turned that trend around, adding a net 257,028 subscribers in the fourth quarter. The company also says the results demonstrated the economic benefits of the merger of DC-based XM and NYC-based Sirius, which was completed in July 2008 after some controversy. In the quarter, it cut expenses in several areas, including on-air talent and customer call centers. AP has more..... Radio One Cancels DC Move - 2/25 - DCRTV hears that Radio One has cancelled the planned move of its HQ and DC area radio studio facilities from Lanham, in Maryland's Prince George's County, to DC's Shaw neighborhood. According to the Washington Business Journal, the decision has dealt a major blow to an already long-delayed mixed-use project backed by the city. The company, owner of 53 urban and gospel-formatted radio stations in 16 markets nationwide, had planned to return to the city where it was founded by Catherine Hughes more than 20 years ago, with Hughes herself testifying before the DC Council about her desire to return to DC. Radio One would have been the anchor tenant in Broadcast Center One, a project that was slated to bring 103,000 square feet of office space and 25,000 square feet of retail directly atop an entrance to the Shaw-Howard University Metro station, financed by $30 million in subsidies. In the DC market, Radio One owns WKYS, WMMJ, WPRS, WOL, and WYCB. Since then, WMET has been selling its time slots and running mainly ethnic programming.....ESPN Punishes Kornheiser For Being Kornheiser - 2/25 - From NewsBlues: Tony Kornheiser "may be a rotten bastard, but his ESPN bosses are idiots for suspending him," writes Jack Shafer in Slate. "Kornheiser is one of those guys whose ugly side is his only side. But the fact that ESPN has suddenly taken to punishing (him) for being an oozing bag of pus and venom raises more questions about the network than it does about the employee... Much - but not all - of sports radio relies on frat-boy humor to carry the freight between serious discussions about teams, games, and players. If Kornheiser's TV network bosses are genuinely upset about what their employee said about another employee on the radio, they should fire him. But they won't fire him, because they aren't actually upset. The ESPN brass is punishing Kornheiser for being Kornheiser when they should be punishing themselves for running their network like a high-school locker room." Despite his two-week ESPN suspension, Kornheiser continues to do his 10 AM radio show on DC's ESPN 980, WTEM..... Contract Delays Ryan's Jump To 7 - 2/25 - Paul Farhi at the Washington Post tells us that the reason Channel 7/WJLA isn't annoucing Bob Ryan's jump is because the longtime Channel 4/WRC weatherman has to sit out a non-compete clause in his contract. DCRTV first broke the news yesterday that Friday will be Ryan's last day at NBC4. His contract is expiring and there have been rumblings for weeks that Ryan will move to 7, but, as the Post reports, Ryan may have to stay off the air for several weeks, and potentially several months, due to a "cooling-off" period that can run anywhere from 60 days to six months. The Post adds that Ryan has been unhappy with an increased workload on the air at Channel 4, and his diminished presence on the station's website. NBC's WRC has been using weather data supplied by the NBC-owned Weather Channel's Weather.com on its site, which has reduced Ryan's profile online..... It's Official: Ryan Leaving 4, 7 Denies Nabbing Him (Yet) - 2/24 - ![]() DCRTV hears that Channel 4/WRC has issued an official memo today confirming that weatherman Bob Ryan's (right) last day at the NBC station will be Friday. "No mention of going to 7, but he is definitely leaving as of Friday," a source tells DCRTV. Earlier today, a reliable 4 insider told DCRTV that Ryan is jumping from 4, after 31 years there, to Channel 7/WJLA, with his last day at 4 being Friday. However, a spokesperson for 7 tells DCRTV: "We emphatically deny there is any deal between Mr. Ryan and WJLA-TV." A few weeks ago, DCRTV reported rumblings that Ryan might be making the jump. The word is that Ryan would do ABC7's 11 PM weathercasts, freeing up Doug Hill to concentrate on the 5 PM and 6 PM weathercasts and spend more time with his family in evenings. Read Ryan's farewell to 4 memo in DCRTV's 2/24 Mailbag. WaPo: CP's Wemple A Critic Of Allbritton Web Venture He's Joining - 2/24 - Yesterday, Washington City Paper top editor Erik Wemple announced that he's jumping to Allbritton's new local news web venture. Now, the Washington Post reminds us: "In his City Paper column, Wemple often criticized the Post and its online operations. The Post's news site was headed by Jim Brady, who will be Wemple's boss at Allbritton. Wemple also had raised questions about the viability of Allbritton's local website, which he sarcastically referred to as 'PostKiller.com.' In an October column, he wrote that he doubted whether such an operation could be profitable, given that few online news sites have made money"..... Wemple's "Wisdom" On Allbritton's Local News Venture - 2/24 - Rant. When I talk to people I don't hear: "Gee, we really need another local news website." If you want local news, you can get it on the web in plenty of places. Of course, there's the gigantic Washington Post and the up-and-coming Washington Examiner. (The Washington Times just dumped local news, finding it unprofitable.) Five local TV stations, plus at least three radio stations, including the all-inclusive WTOP, as well as WMAL and WAMU. Along with a batch of suburban newspapers like the Gazette, the Times, and the Journal-Messenger. Not to mention a flurry of local news websites and blogs, a la dcist.com and washingtoncitypaper.com. So, you've got to wonder, like soon-to-be-former City Paper top editor Erik Wemple did last year, why Allbritton, which owns 7, NC8, and the Politico, is spending a whole lotta bucks to start a new local news website. Even if it is a relative success, it's gonna have a lot of local competition for ad revenue and eyeballs. And, unlike the launch of the national political news-based and highly successful Politico a few years back, it's not aiming at a big national audience (and defense contractor advertisers), but instead a much smaller local media pond. Hey, Wemple, who'll now be a top editor at the new Allbritton local news outfit, just because Allbritton stumbled onto a good thing with the Politico, it doesn't mean it's got a winner with yet another local news website. In fact, it's probably got a long, tough slog ahead of it, especially if this recessionary economy continues. Good luck, you'll need it. ESPN Suspends Korny For Storm Remarks - 2/23 - Sporting News is reporting that Tony Kornheiser (right) has been suspended as host of ESPN's "Pardon The Interruption" for comments he made on his radio show last week about Hannah Storm's wardrobe. Kornheiser apologized to Storm after making the remarks. An ESPN spokesman says he will be suspended "for some time," which is expected to translate into a few days. Kornheiser said Storm was wearing "a horrifying, horrifying outfit" and a "very, very tight shirt... She looks like she has sausage casing wrapping around her upper body," he added. "I know she's very good, and I'm not supposed to be critical of ESPN people, so I won't... but Hannah Storm... come on now! Stop! What are you doing?... She's what I would call a Holden Caulfield fantasy at this point." The columnist and broadcaster opened his ESPN 980 radio show the next day by saying, "I apologize, unequivocally... I'm a sarcastic, subversive guy... I'm a troll, look at me. I have no right to insult what anybody looks like or what anybody wears. That, I think, should go without saying." The suspension will not affect his ESPN 980 10 AM to noon show because the station, WTEM, is owned by Redskins owner Dan Snyder, not ESPN. More: Kornheiser's ESPN suspension is reportedly two weeks.....Wemple To Leave City Paper For Allbritton - 2/23 - Erik Wemple, the editor of Washington City Paper, will leave the freebie weekly in mid-March for a top editor gig at Allbritton's as-yet-unnamed DC area local news website, which is planned for a spring launch. He left in 2000 to work for the short-lived Inside.com and returned as editor of the paper in 2002.
